How far does such a review need to go:
Go-1K, iPhone 3G, 3790T in a thickness comparison
And as a screen reflectivity check:
A direct head to head will take some time to write and is a little unfair as the G product isn't Live connected, a couple of pictures will have to suffice for now - Mike |

The 37x0 devices are nice, and the 800x480 screen (I assume) puts the 1000 to shame, but the lack of live services is a joke.
I assume Garmin will be releasing a new set of 37x0 devices with Live services, because it's ridiculous having the 1690 (at £100 cheaper) having this feature but the 3790 not.
1690 vs GO 1000 looks like a better comparison, one that the Garmin should win easily on price, if nothing else. |

That's about the sum of it yes. New device with less features and software that is new but does less than the versions in replaces! The only improvement worthy of remark is the mount. |
Good old Tomtom! |

Personally, I don't like the mount!
The idea of using magnets to grip it is a good one, but the implementation (with a big square plug hanging out of the bottom of the mount (often at an odd angle when the Go is not fitted) looks ugly and messy.
(Note the reflections from the (otherwise excellent) new screen too!)
Also, the pressure needed to pull the Go off the magnets often makes the mount droop down so you are constantly having to re-adjust the angle. |

No doubt when you put the unit in your pocket the magnet will wipe the magnetic data strips on the back of your credit card. This has happened to me before with the very old silver TomTom GPS unit. _________________ Drivelux |

There are only three magnets in the actual device, a small one either end of the connector, the other one being part of the loud speaker, the main magnet is in the windscreen mount rather than the device. These days most cards are "Chip-n-Pin" so there isn't there same need to keep magnets away from the card.
That said don't put car park tickets in your pocket with this unit as they do get wiped out - Mike |

Even though all my cards are chip and pin there are still places where this is not used and a swipe is made of my card.
Same goes for train tickets as parking tickets. _________________ Drivelux |

Magnets of course do gradually lose their magnetism [metaphor for TT?] _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

Also notice that the connector leaves to the right - which is fine for a LH drive car, but means it always angles back across the unit. Not designed for the UK market.
My new TT730 traffic connector does the same.

Nothing unusual with that. It would be unusual for any manufacturer to design separate hardware solutions for LHD/RHD.
Also, consider that many UK drivers choose to locate their devices to the right of the wheel anyway. Can't see it affects usage but a nicer solution would be either a cable that exits vertically down or to the rear. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I would rather manufacturers of PNDs moved away from slimmer and slimmer devices and instead used used the space freed up versus earlier designs for longer life batteries - then we could do away with cigar lighter cords altogether. |

All they'd have to do would be to provide a double ended connector ie T-shaped, so you could use the direction of cabling you preferred. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

Is there any specification data available for actual release versions of the GO 1000/1005?.
For example, I note someone earlier mentions that there is no SD card slot, but I'm left wondering what the internal memory is in that case?.
Thanks |
