Just watched this week's Gadget Show (aired Monday 2nd August) and the trailer for next week's episode includes a mountain navigation challenge, with shots of the what looks like the Memory Map Adventurer 2800 GPS in use on Ben Nevis. No sign of the Satmap Active 10, but given that it has been a firm favourite of the Gadget Show in the past, maybe it'll make an appearance?

Worth a watch, I reckon.

I've just had a quick trawl of the Memory Map Adventurer 2800 spec and various users' reviews.

Weight 135g v 234g for an Active 10 with standard LiPol battery. But battery life may be only 8 hours, compared to up to 22 hours for the Active 10, without adding a second battery source at the rear and hence extra bulk and weight (and does that affect its waterproofness?).

Screen 2.8" v 3.5" for the Active 10. This seems quite restricted compared to the Active 10, requiring more zooming and panning to pick up off-screen details (which leads to my next point about operation).

Operation is touchscreen v buttons on the Active 10. Several users have commented about having to use the supplied stylus to operate some of its functions if they have large fingers or when wearing gloves. It might not be so user friendly as the Active 10 which can be used one handed when on the go, even in the winter.

Several Memory Map Adventurer 2800 users commented about being put off purchasing the Active 10 by old reviews referring to software bugs. In my experience the latest software is stable and does what I expect it to do.

It will be interesting to see if the Gadget Show tester(s) pick up on any of these points.
