I tried to find this in the archive but can't locate it.

Sometime ago there was a discussion on the forum about PAYG contracts and GPS and I believe Orange was discussed as one of the best.

1. Is my memory correct about this or is it another provider that was referenced?

2. When I buy a PAYG phone do I need to ask for GPRS arrangements, once again I seem to recall this was a requirement.

Thank yuo for any advice or input on your experiences.

I'm not sure if Orange do one, tbh I'm out of touch on this side of things. From what I recall there was discussion about Vodafone being the only one that offered a PAYG GPRS connection with full unbarred content.

Thats quite uncanny. I was thinking about this today, due to my phone only taking one bluetooth connectiong (my car kit) I would need a pay-as-you-go GPRS (bluetooth) phone for Tom Tom Traffic. Then I just need its car charger wired in permanently, I hide the phone away somewhere and sorted ;)

Orange offers a full mobile internet access on PAYG.
T-Mobile PAYG does but charges around £20 per MB.
02 PAYG does not work with TT.

So I just need to see if I can get a cheap BT & GPRS handset... hmm, could be tricky. I guess a Nokia 6310i might be the cheapest option?

I have GPRS working fine on my Sagem myx6 on Orange PAYG.
I had to phone them and they sent me a couple of SIM updates.
It was working within 24 hours after that.
Can browse the web fully on my PDA via infrared to the phone.
I believe it'scharged at about £4 per MB though.

I have an XDA2 on O2 running TT3. GPRS pay as you go works fine with TT3 on O2.

GPRS is charged at about £2.36 for the first MB then £1.50 thereafter per month. The only problem I have encountered was that the GPRS connection kept dropping out after a few requests for info, the latest TT update has solved this!

Sorry to have confused the issue, yes I am on an O2 contract, however I use GPRS on a Pay as You Go basis!

It is a shame that it is not available for the PAYG 02 service. I am not sure why they don't offer it as there must be a good market for the product. They would only have to allow the PAYG customers access to the same service

BTMobile do not offer Mobile Internet on their contract service which is why I now want the PAYG GPRS as an add on. My work 02 mobile is not supposed to have GPRS activated as there is no genuine business need for it, so I am sure when they notice I have it, it will be stopped.

Problem is that most of the phone shops I have visited have no idea of the difference between WAP over GPRS and Mobile Internet and can give bad advice.

GPRS (General Radio Packet Services) is a data transmission service for mobile phones. The main difference between the Mobile Internet and WAP flavours is what you can access.

Mobile Internet is an internet connection where you can do most things that you would do on the internet at home with a dial-up or ADSL modem.

WAP over GPRS is accessing specific content that is chosen (eg BBC News) or re-hosted by your Service Provider, it used to be only available as WAP over GSM services (pay per minute). Theoretically a provider could choose to offer TT Traffic on a WAP service, but I have not heard of this happening.

It must be a marketing decision not to offer Mobile Internet on a service as I would have thought this would be cheaper to provide than the WAP style services. Perhaps it is to drive people to contract services rather than PAYG. However once one company offers it, others can only lose by not.

i have PAYG on o2 and have no problems downloading traffic info.

i had to work it out for myself becasue o2 staff have got NO IDEA what their own systems/networks allow....

idiots they are!!

O2 PAYG users are "getting away" with using GPRS Internet and are at the mercy of O2 not restricting the Internet Access Point (APN). More power to you if you do, but you should know that it may stop working at sometime in the future.

Personally, I think that it's because they want to charge PAYG users for MMS and such-like, for which there are Internet protocol alternatives. Ask me what I think and I'll start a rant about how I think the mobile operators are legalised bandits, whose come-uppance will one day come ;)
