Agreed. However I don't think Apple would have made a song and dance about the antenna system on the iPhone 4 if there was no improvement. So I at least expect it to work better than the iPhone 3GS. This could be wrong but I think it's just much more likely to have improved is all.

It seems reasonable to assume that the iPhone 4 will use the same GPS chipset as fitted in the iPad 3G. This is a different one to that fitted to 3G and 3GS and the performance on iPad is very much better.

Let's hope that the improvement is manifested on the new iPhone too.

I upgrade my 3G S to iOS4 and it seems there are some serious problems with TomTom crashing every time I try to enter the destination via POI, Google local search or by entering the address.

TomTom are aware. Given this is a Beta release it is to be expected that some apps will have issues with it but you can be assured that a fix is in the pipeline.

EDIT: Regarding the ways of upgrading iOS4 GM; according to Apple release notes you should do restore with iOS4 GM and not upgrade. Don't know why but thats what they say.

All iPhone Betas are delivered using a custom .ipsw which can only be installed via a restore. There are many non-trivial updates such as radio baseband etc which cannot be delivered via an upgrade AIUI.

Good to know that the iPad has a much stronger GPS signal, I didn't know that but it makes sense that they'd keep improving this over each hardware revision. Well at least while it was a little on the weak side.

As for iOS 4. It's a GM release. I'm pretty sure the one on the developer site is the one customers will get in a week or two. It doesn't need the device to be registered as a developer device unlike the beta's. Same thing happened last year with OS 3.0.

I've noticed there is a lot of apps which don't work all that great on iOS 4 but worked fine on 3.x. Either a lot of these apps did use private API's but made it onto the App Store or Apple's stick to public API's and your App won't break comments are a little off.

This means that you will be able to run your Turn by Turn navigation app alongside your favorite Speed Camera Warning app (assuming that supports multitasking too).

How will this work though?

If I could get sound alerts from CamerAlert while using TomTom, all well and good.

Even sound alerts from TomTom while using CamerAlert would be OK.

Having to switch between the apps to get either though would be only marginally more useful than the setup under the current iOS version though.

anything using private APIs will NOT get through! apple simply change / update existing methods of accessing certain functions so unless an app's code is updated it simply won't work properly.

from what i understand, the apps will be able to emit a sound and also a 'blue popup' (similar to a push notification) which would allow you to jump back to the other app nice and fast. as the app is already running in teh background it will be there, ready as opposed to having to wait for it to load up, wait for satellite fix etc. while cameralert was open you would be able to get spoken directions from tomtom etc.

If you get sound from both then that's excellent, as I can finally use my favourite SatNav app and favourite speed camera app together!

Do hope this is not too far off topic but needed more than 140 char. Having a tweet chat with DG tonight re the upcoming release of iOS4. As an avid iPhone user I'm a little disappointed that Apple didn't take the oportunity to install profiles, to be able to select 3g/2g wifi bluetooth (and displaybrightness for nighttime alarm clock use). I travel mostly by car in my medical sales role, but occasionally journey by train/tube for the day. This means that I have to try to make my crap-battery-life last a whole day without a topup. Meaning I adjust my 3g/2g wifi bluetooth settings to max out battery life. BUT they're not all in one place and choosing them all is not as user-friendly as it could be. Profiles anyone?
