pocketgpsworld.comGot an Android phone running v1.6 or later of Android?

If you have then some good news for you. Google's Navigation App has been updated and overnight an update was sent to UK handsets enabling the turn-by-turn navigation feature.

Google's navigation app is free albeit basic and delivers map data over the air (OTA) so a data service is required and you do need to have a good network connection. The app has a novel StreetView mode with turn directions overlaid over the streetview data but how well this actually works we cannot comment on until we're up and running.

As yet handsets running earlier Android versions are not supported. We have HTC's Hero handsets which are still on 1.5 but HTC have promised an update to 2.0 shortly.

More information on Google's Maps Navigation homepage here.

I guess they have kicked TeleAtlas to the kerb over here now then.

I wonder if the map data is as bad as the US.

according to my big bruv, "acording to the legal terms its" shed "loads [of providers]. including teleatlas".

so perhaps they're using TA still for the UK? At least for the time being...

I've recently put a custom 2.1 ROM on my Hero so have now got this. Seems very nice on first look - I've also noticed that maps now support multi-touch zooming.

Had a go at converting the speed camera database to work with it..

Not much luck, really. If you import into google maps you get only 200 POI on any one map. There's a 'trick' that'll get it to display 1000.. but that's the limit. With there being about 12,000 POI to display that's a lot missing.

Now in theory if you created about 13 files then displayed every layer at once it could work - but I bet you'd hit another limit.

Edit: No go there.. There is a maximum of 2 'my maps' able to be shown at any one time. If you select 3, it disables one of them Sad

Too little too late. Just got rid of my Magic in favor of going back to Nokia. I loved everything about Android but its speed. My X6, while not as well finished software wise, is speedy and responsive.

Had this been released a little sooner maybe I would have stayed with Android Sad

don't tar them all with the same brush! the magic IS a pretty slow device - particularly if you have the vodafone google phone version which has half the ram of the standard magic.

some of the newer ones are far, far, far faster! remember android is just the operating system - it needs decent hardware to run it well.

I've just got the HTC Desire with Android and its pretty slick, but i still can't see how they think google street view will ever be able to update fast enough to actually show where you are..... nice idea though
As for the HTC Desire, dare i say i'm still in two minds about the touch screen, still like the Nokia E52/E72 with proper buttons....

street view is only shown when you are going through the turn list and look at a specific junction. you then press the 'person' button and you are shown the junction. you CAN NOT navigate using street view!

Might help you with teh keys
http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/thickbuttons-keyboard_fqxt.html
- having trouble hitting the rights keys on the touch screen sometimes? then get this, it guesses what key you about to press next and makes it bigger for you.
