I'm off to the USA in August for our summer hols, doing a lot of driving. So I'll be taking my TomTom.

I see that TomTom themselves are selling the USA maps on SD card for £52 (including postage), which is curiously cheaper than many sellers on ebay!

Is TomTom the best/cheapest place to buy the maps?

It's certainly the safest place to buy any TomTom map. We in North America don't get offered maps on sd cards as you in Europe do.

When on a sd card, the map being locked to the card rather than the unit will work on any unit with a sd card slot.

At least that is my understanding.

(You just can't copy the card contents to another card and expect the second card to work).

Just being curious here, but if somebody buys a Map from TomTom on SD card, does that map come with Latest Map Guarantee? and if so, does the latest map install to the Card or to the Device? and then is that card locked to that device or can it still be used in other devices?. Ditto for map updates.

Regards, Ali.

EDIT - Sorry, just reaslised that this is probably off-topic. No reply needed here.

After searching it seems Tomtom is indeed the cheapest place.

However, they do 2 versions of the USA map. One is about £7 more expensive and the only APPARENT difference is "IQ Routes".

Given I make no use of IQ, could I just go for the cheaper map, even though according to the information on Tomtom I am required to buy the more expensive IQ version to ensure compatablity?

May I humbly suggest a map with imbedded IQ routing is the way to go...... especially if you're advised that this is the map you need.

Best thing is to ring and ask TomTom (see phone number in my signature, they'll be closed until Tuesday I suspect). Or send them a support question so that you get a reply in writing that you can then hold them to if it's wrong. Frankly, if the difference is only £7, it'll not be a lot compared with the price of your holiday, will it? Maybe the non IQ routes one is an older map?
