Hi Guys,

I know this is a little off topic but I am looking at a way to connect the iPhone to the dash somehow.

Has anyone got any recommendations.

All the best

Andy

Brodit proclip and holder. With the Proclips you don't need to drill or stick anything permanently to the car.

I get mine from DSLDevelopments.com. Usually quick to deliver

A couple of ideas, the standard Brodit clip with a Brodit powered holder, you can read whats involved in fitting it in This Thread, but here is a picture of the finished job:

Or if your iPhone suffers from poor GPS performance (like mine) there is the TomTom iPhone holder which is available in two versions, firstly is the Windscreen sucker type or secondly the Brodit style (I modified the windscreen type to fit on to a Brodit mount a while back as the only version available at the time was the windscreen sucker type).

DSL Developments are the place to contact for this type of kit, its not cheap but remember how much the phone costs so you need it in a secure location and if you plan to use it for car based Navigation you really must have the device powered up or the battery will flatten in no time at all - Mike

Hi Guys,

Thanks very much for the info, I will have a look at these.

Does the iPhone got flat quick even if maps are not being used in CamerAlert?

All the best.

The use of any GPS app on the iPhone will flatten the battery rather quickly, you might get over an hour from a full charge but when you get to where you are going the phone will be flat - In car use needs a powered mount for anything other than short local trips - Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the info about the battery usage.

Basically I have just got a new car with built in SatNav (no POI update), before I had a Nuvi connected to the windscreen with wires dangling everywhere, I am trying to get away from this so maybe the iPhone is not the way to go then.

My power socked is down behind the gearstick, is the iPhone GPS strong enough to work from this location? If so I could have it down there and just listen to the audio.

Otherwise my best bet seems to be the Novus rider because of its long battery life.

Cheers

Andy

You can try it in the car low down and see what it does, I know mine certainly wouldn't work located there unless it were in the car kit holder, You could always add another ciggy socket behind the dash and use that for powering the device - Mike

Which iPhone do you have? iPhone4 should work fine, Brodit definitely the best mounting solutions and it need not be near the socket, they have a long charge lead.

For a £400+ device I'd be a bit scared to use just velcro!!!

My iPhone 4 GPS often gets left in the little stogae area in front of the gear stick, and the GPS works fine from there Smile

( I am waiting for delivery of the Brodit mounting clip though ! )

Attach hooky velcro to car.

Attach soft velcro to iPhone.

Press iPhone gently Velcro (too hard and when you remove it the soft velcro will part from the iPhone, the velcro grip is so good!)

As others have said, except for a short local journey, the battery drain will be high running Tom Tom and cameralert along with other apps - like the phone! So best to connect by cable to the power source. In that position I find it's easily viewable while driving, away from the glare of the sun often found when using windscreen mounts.

I know some people here doubt that the velcro solution is viable, but it works. It's cheap so worth a try before you move on to more expensive options if you find it doesn't work for you.
