Hi there,

My wife is about to get an iphone 3GS & I want to her to use it as a GPS system.

I was just wondering what car cradles/kits you are presently using that are any good?

Thanks in advance for all responses.

I have one of these

It does have a tendency to wobble but if it is supported on the dash it is fine.

Downside is having to remove the iphone from the case!
Upside is small profile as not to obstruct veiw!

Budget?

If you don't want the expense of the fully featured TT CarKit, I use the Brodit Adjustable cradle which works well for me."

Reviewed here.

You can do it much cheaper but I wanted one that holds it properly and uses the Brodit ProClip mounts I have in the car.

Mine is on a Brodit clip:

See This Thread for more details (note that since I did this Brodit have brought out a TomTom car kit mount negating the need to get the Dremel out)

The big plus point with the TomTom mount is the improved GPS reception and an additional speaker for louder volume from the kit, I only tend to use the car kit for the GPS though as I have a better Bluetooth system fitted in the car that the iPhone connects to - Mike

If I was going to go with a mount with an additional gps chip, the Magellan carkit is actually more adjustable according to users and doesn't require (most) cases to be removed before mounting, unlike TomTom's. It's also compatible with the iPod, again unlike TomTom's. If you feel your gps reception is fine with being augmented, then I've also seen several good comments on the Brodit mount as already mentioned.

I'm not convinced the TT iPhone Carkit doesn't support the iPod Touch. Has anyone actually tried it?

I saw pictures from a user attempting use for the iPod. Unfortunately it's ever so slightly smaller than the iPhone so the TT clips can't contact both top and bottom at once. It won't work.

I don't have on but wouldn't a case resolve that if its just a physical form issue?

Thnaks for all the responses.

I have had Brodit kit before & been very impressed with it so that seems the best & obvious option.

Thanks again.

Whilst on the subject of car mounts. does anyone have any recommendations for the best cradle to fit a Herbert Richter mount which would fit an iphone otterbox defender. At the moment it looks like the universal cradle but any advice would be gratefully received.
many thanks

Is the HR a four prong mount? Brodit do an adapter then get a MOVE clip. Stick one to Brodit adapter and the other to the rear of the Defender case or even the holster?

See Brodit website and search on MOVE or Part #213005 and RICHTER for the Hr adapters.

Move clips are very slim and have 3M tape on them. I use them on all my in-car mounts so i can switch cradles easily.

Darren
many thanks indeed, now on the track of best deal.
At the moment I have been using the HR magnetic holder to switch quickly between cars, but it just does not have the strength to deal with the defender case. This looks as though it should sort the problem, although the HR base mount is, I assume, now made unusable as the MOVE plate is stuck over it?

No, the Brodit adapter attaches TO the HR mount using the 4-prong system and you would then affix the MOVE clip to the adapter.

The problem I have with any designed for iPhone mount is that they only work with a "naked" iPhone
I always have mine in a case (currently an Incipio case. Which is very thin so not to much extra bulk)
I am in and out of the car all day and having to remove from mount, then refit case etc is a pain
I tried loads if diffrent options of made up mounts and bespoke solotions to no avail
I now have the most simplest and neatest mount ever. I stuck a 4cm by 2cm piece of velcro on the back of the incipio case and the other bit of velcro on the dash facia. Its worked a treat ever since

Ill post a pic tommorow
