Christmas and New Year are over so it must be time to pack our bags and head off to Las Vegas for CES. This year it is being held from the 7th to 10th January, but we are heading out early as a lot of the action happens outside the show and before it starts.

2009 was a bad year for most industries, and indeed CES looked a little sparse from the exhibitor point of view, but despite that the innovations continued and the Technology Industry was not affected as badly as others. This is shown by the fact that CES 2010 has a record number of new exhibitors: 330. They will join the 2,500 repeat exhibitors for the show.

A number of new features will be showcased this year, including an iLounge for everything iPhone, iPod, and Mac. This despite the fact that Apple themselves will not be in attendance. Whilst on the subject of Apple it will be interesting to see what the main SatNav companies will be showing both from an iPhone and an Android point of view.

So far I have not heard of any big announcements from the major SatNav companies, but they always have new developments to show. The most controversial meeting I have set up is with Siano, the company promoting TV on your SatNav.

In a few short hours time we will be in Vegas and the fun will start...

Mike, do stop by the Cydle booth. They have some pretty interesting devices integrating GPS navigation with other functions like video, HD radio, even North America's first HDTraffic service. No subscription needed apparently. A few oddities in operation from what I've been hinted, but the prices are right.

Laughing Out Loud, you are kidding right? No-one is going to even acknowledge it exists until Steve Jobs parades it at the launch let alone discuss spec.

I was, just hoping you may be able to pick up some rumours whilst you are there!

I think the rumour mill is consumed with the iSlate right now but the GPS chipset in iPhone 4 is unlikely to be the subject of discussion, but we'll see.

Not exactly GPS related but there's an interesting twist to the iSlate story...

we'll see what Steve Ballmer produces today...

And maybe a few hints about the next iPhone's hardware.

Unless they've confused things with the yet-to-announce Apple tablet Wink

Not sure if this is common knowledge but Apple have never really attended CES. Most of the years they held competing events at the same time but this year they are delayed (rumours say because of glass quality problems with their iSlate). Only the fanboi companies are here and show gazillions of accessories for the phone. Some of the more useful ones we saw yesterday is the Magellan iPhone/iPod Touch GPS cradle (which unlike the TomTom cradle also accepts devices with the skin in place - more on that soon.)

The biggest TomTom news to come out at CES will be their announcement of free lifetime map updates as well as lifetime traffic. AFAIK, the new map update program will only apply to new models going forward and not the current x30/x40's for instance. Traffic will be via a new cable to be offered sometime in the next couple of months. Details should be offered sometime today.

But they mean it this time. Really. There's a press release. . . in writing. And it's for North America. They wouldn't say it if it wasn't a fact. Right? Thumbs Up e

It's clearly not going to be a HD Traffic type solution if free, it'll have to be delivered over the radio network?

Thinking about iPhone v PDA, the display size seems to be the main point in favour of PDA, whereas the iPhone seems to have all the other advantages, especially 'open-source'-type 3rd-party applications, and product future-proofing (ie not having to switch from an obsolete model to a new-range one to get new facilities).

Would it be silly (put that mouse down Darren Razz !) to imagine an interface being provided by iPhone (kept in its cradle) to a larger 'dumb' display mounted on the windscreen? If this was a goer, surely PDA would be well and truly DEAD Shocked
