I am out in the US next week with my payasyougo iPhone. I was going to download Copilot for the USA, but I noted on their FAQ that it says:

Quote:
I cannot get a GPS fix whilst in another country
This is because you have disabled data roaming on your iPhone. You need roaming enabled to get a GPS fix on the iPhone. Please check in SETTINGS that LOCATION SERVICES is set to ON.

So will any routing app work abroad with data roaming turned off?

Cheers,

Greg

I think that FAQ is badly worded. You certainly need location services on, but not roaming. All the big name GPS apps should work with roaming off.

Indeed, data roaming is not required to get a GPS location and all the major names, TomTom, CoPilot, Navigon, NDrive etc, none require data access to operate.

You may want to peruse the latest news item on our front page, NDrive US is £17.99 as an introductory price.

Still think Navigon is the best app so far, not the cheapest but nevertheless better than all the others. Newcomer Navmii has just arrived, looks Ok from first impressions but still not as good as Navigon.

As I don't have an iPhone, I can't comment but it may be worth someone with knowledge saying whether the apps require data enabled to download the local map data. Do they all keep a complete global map on the device or do you have to download it as required? Confused

None of the apps that are non-subscription require map data be downloaded. The only app I know of is Motion-X's solution (US Only) which is subscription based and has maps off-board.

All the mainstream apps I mentioned have maps on-board.

Has anyone had problems with Copilot (in the UK) when there's no network connectivity? I've been in situations in Norfolk when there was no network and also recently when there was a problem with O2's data network on PAYG. In both instances, the app took ages to start up and frequently crashed out. Once in coverage range, all works fine. I switched off auto-updates but it made no difference. I'm not sure what the app is needing the network for though.

I've not experienced any issue. I was going to suggest you could replicate it to test by switching off the radio but of course this would also disable GPS!

i've had similar. i also find that when i open up copilot i get the little 'ding' to say that new emails have been received... now, the only reason it would do this is if 'mail' was opened and oh, what a coincidence, it does it when i start up copilot... my thinking is that it sends a message 'home' to ALK for something - maybe to check activation codes? anti-piracy? with no data connection at all the app loads fine, with a poor gprs connection it loads but can take a lot longer...

ooh, conspiracy theories!
