Can you mount the phone on the TomTom mount if the phone is in a case?

I completely agree with who ever said this is just too pricey.

At best the iPhone solution will always be a bit of a compromise & at £160 its an expensive bit of kit compared with the functionality a dedicated navigation unit at that price point would have (not least of which the possibility to have Pocket GPS World speed cams easily installed).

Hi all

this has now arrived and a few points to note are

1. power supply is a very chunky 1.2 amps
2. the ball joint comes apart with 2 screws so you can change the mount
3. there is a new app in itunes
4. this is the BIG one why oh why do you need to turn on the iphone location services for it to work!!!!!!!as this is just madness
5. it does state that it will work with other gps apps

I will be testing it on sunday and it is up against my TomTom go 940 live last time I went on a trip, I would descride the iphone as "ok" but would NOT get rid of the Go so we will see if at last I can have just one device

thanks Terry

Well you'd obviously need Location Services enabled because otherwise the iPhone disables access to the GPS. At a guess this stops apps accessing the TomTom mounts GPS because it must be hooking into the standard API's for GPS otherwise the GPS chip wouldn't work with other apps.

It is only an observation from watching You tube reviews done by the same person who did the unboxing, but when he was testing the cradle/phone in a moving car the indicator arrow on the maps still seemed to be a litttle way behind when the turn needed to be made.

Hi there and yes you would be right it is still Evil or Very Mad laggy Evil or Very Mad it does get better. I have an io play in the car and have fun and games with this cradle when a call comes in.
I did not do the pairing as then every thing comes through the tomtom cradle, music, calls and directions.
I will give it another week to see if I can live with the fact that I plug the phone in and then press the io play button and music comes over my car speakers untill a call come then it all goes to the cradle.

What I was after was better sat pick up and a car cradle dont know if I have got either.Laughing Out Loud
it may be going back to Apple

What happens if you answer the call using the iO-Play as that should take over the handsfree function, if the audio is locked to the cradle then its yet another black mark against it - Mike

Which iPhone are you using? Do you have push notifications on with lots of services? On my 3GS I very rarely see lag, but I am using the US version of the app not the UK version, and I am not running the iPod in the background. I am wondering if it is a load/processor/memory issue.

Hi Mike

I have a 32 gig 3GS no push working only blu tooth to the IO..and yes when a call comes the cradle takes over, to the extent that I was listening to music from the phone and had TomTom running "still testing it" my wife called me and the music stopped on the io and I could not hear her as the cradle was low.

there is also a problem with the Tomtom speach when sending it to the io as she only gets mid way and them stops. not all the time but some

it seems to give priority to the cradle even when it ant paired!!!!

apple sell the app therefore you would need to see them about a refund.

Refunds work differently for Hardware and Software. You have effectively made 2 purchases one for hardware and one for software.

I would be very surprised if you get a refund for the application as software is only refundable if you havent opened the packaging. I assume that by downloading it you have assumed to have opened the packaging.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi

i am going to use the distance selling regulations on them as for opening there was none.Laughing Out Loud.
the only problem I can see is the fact that it has been some time ago that I got the app, like day it was out.
but I am ok with the app i will only use it in an emergency when I am in someone’s car or walking. I really did want a way to charge and hold my iphone in the car, the idea of tomtom on it was a big plus.
I do listen to music a lot on my phone through the io play and when running TomTom and the ipod the phone did get very warm indeed.
Never mind back to my GO 940 live and the iphone for calls and music. I will probably pick up a tomtom cradle when the price drops to about the £30 mark as I am sure it will once people start to live with it.
I will then take it apart and start to chop it about

Hi
I've had a tomtom car kit since Monday. I have installed co-pilot (not bying tomtom until it has improved). No lag on my 3GS. Also I get a fix immediatly (well within a few secs). Much quicker than my HTC Diamond. Only complaint is speed cameras. No mobiles on co-pilot. Must find a way of creating the ezp file format with pocketgpsworld data!!
Car kit hands free works well. Not much echo and clear at both ends. It charges, sticks to the window and works as advertised. Yes, at £50 it would be good value. At £99 it isn't but I have yet to find a cheaper alternative for hands free use (without echo).

I have bought the TomTom iPhone Car Kit because although I found navigation worked OKish I wanted it to work better, and it does.

I was pleasantly suprised, when I opened the box, with the quality of the car kit. The multiplug at the bottom that fits into the iPhone is pivoted to allow for the fact that the phone swings slightly when you attach it to the holder. This prevents any strain on the plug socket; a nice touch. Also the top of the holder that clips over the top of the phone has a small rubberised roller to prevent marking the case of the phone; another nice touch. The sucker works really well and sticks like glue. Very little chance of it falling off. The ball joint is very stiff, which is a good thing. The mount is quite rigid when fitted and allows operation of the phone without it flopping around all over the place. You can swivel the mount easily for landscape or portrait view. The handsfree works well, nice and clear and loud enough. The GPS signal is much improved, the lag is minimal and time to a fix is only a few seconds. It also connects directly to the car radio for playing songs.

I use the car kit with Copilot. I did initially buy TomTom but frankly I am very disappointed with it. Coplilot works well. I think the graphics are better, it works from contacts better, the POI's are better, it updates cameras each time it's switched on, live traffic is coming soon along with controls within the app for the iPod side of things and it's half the price of TomTom.

Overall the TomTom iPhone car kit is a quality product that is very well made and does everything it says on the tin. It folds flat and is easily carried for the business trips I go on when I get a hire car.

£99 does sound expensive but when you look at the quality and functionality then maybe it's not that expensive after all.
