im on the understanding that the LIVE trafic feature of the x40 range dont work abroad....

Does anyone know when this wil lbe fixed ? Was gonna borrow my friends 740 for a trip to france later this month.

Is it right that the TomTom XL LIVE Europe already has this function working ?

hope you can help..

If fact looking at the 740 and the XL LVE EUROPE...they seem very similiar devices....The only difference i can see are Voice command feature and the hands free calling for the 740.....

Yet the XL LIVE EUROPE will give you traffic info abroad...something that the 740 doesnt do YET ?

Darren, the x40 will be able to support Live services while roaming in Mainland Europe in the countries Live services are offered by the end of the year, perhaps before in some cases this will be enabled prior to the end of the year.
The XL IQ Live has already got European roaming enabled from new, so one of these will work overseas straight out of the box.

As for differences between the x40 and the XL Live:

mp3 Media player (940 only)
FM Tx (940 only)
Expansion slot for memory card (all x40)
Active Powered mount (all x40)
Connection for Audio line out (all x40 with accessory mount)
Handsfree support for mobile phone (all x40)
Text to speech (all x40 and possibly some XL Live)
ASR (Advanced Speech Recognition) (all x40)
Auto backlight adjust (all x40)

To be honest I think the XL IQ Live combined with a good handsfree kar kit for your phone (I use the iO-Play) is a better solution unless the extra bells and whistles are really important to you - Mike

Having owned Go x00, x10's and x20's (but not x30's or x40's) and now a XL LIVE IQ Europe, I would go with the XL LIVE every time.

All GO models since the original GO x00's have had bugs aplenty, the XL LIVE just works and does everything it says it can faultlessly.

The only real drawback is the lack of TTS on the UK models and the USB1 connection - it takes forever to upgrade a map.

I wouldn't go back though.

The windscreen mount supplied when you buy the Go has a USB connection for connecting to a PC and for power input, so it is "active", but it has no additional connections for line out, iPod etc.
THIS TOMTOM page (and it's sub-pages) shows the optional mounts you can buy.

They might be different versions when you get it out of the box, but the "Latest Map Guarantee" should bring them both upto the same version number.

The maps offered in the TomTom MAPSHOP for the 740 and the XL IQ ROUTES LIVE are both the same 2GB size version. Pop any model into the box and it will tell you what map is the latest available.
Currently they are:

Quote:
Western & Central Europe 2GB v8.35
Download 1825.1 MB
Detailed map seamlessly covering Western and Central Europe - modified to fit devices with 2GB memory. With IQ Routes™ data for faster routing.
Map coverage statistics:

* countries fully covered (99.9%): Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Monaco, Norway, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, the Canary Islands and the Vatican City.
* countries partially covered: Bulgaria (54%), Estonia (72%), Latvia (63%), Slovenia (68%) and Croatia (42%, including major cities and coastal areas)
* roads covered (kms): nearly 9.7 million
* connector roads: other Central European Countries and Russia are covered by a connector network of major roads that allows you seamless navigation throughout the entire region.

Darren

Have a look around the web. John Lewis do it for £170 (when in stock) and Amazon for £177. I've just bought one but got it directly from Tomtom. They sent me a voucher for 25% off the price so got it for £165 delivered.
Just waiting for it to arrive.
