I've been reading and reading and reading and I'm very confused Rolling Eyes

Here's the story:-

I have a TT GO520 which I used to pair with my Sony Ericsson phone on O2 contract to give me handsfree and Live Traffic updates via TT subscription.

Bought an iPhone 3G back some 6 months or so ago. Delighted with it apart from the fact that it won't pair for Live Traffic (and has latterly started playing silly when trying to pair for handsfree Rolling Eyes )

Tried the TT GPS receiver thingy - rubbish reception to the extent that I only ever manage to get live traffic for a small stretch of the M3 and the A27 and nowhere else in the entire country it seems. I know I could have the aerial properly installed rather than just stuck to the windscreen but I'm not planning on keeping the car too much longer so it's not an expense I want to go to.

Tried my old mobile phone with assorted PAYG Sim cards - they either don't work as TT doesn't support or are costing me an absolute fortune as PAYG isn't really designed for data and nothing else.

Now I've been sent an email from TT about the iPhone TT App - but this still doesn't seem to support Live Traffic.

Is there anyway I can have Live Traffic Updates with a navigation and the iPhone? If it's an iPhone App I'm not overly concerned about it being TT as long as it works properly.

TIA

Sarah

Navigon have announced Traffic Data is coming to their iPhone app shortly.

Alternatively you could upgrade SatNav to one that offers live traffic, Navigon, Medion, Garmin and TomTom have enabled devices.

Thanks Darren.

Is Navigon any good? I've always used TT.

I'm a bit loathe to spend £200 plus on a new TT to get a traffic enabled one when there is nothing wrong with my GO520 Crying or Very sad

very, look through some of the Navigon iPhone posts and you will see that some long time TT users have grown rather fond of Navigon's app.

Indeed, fair comment and you're quite right.

Just found the press release and it looks like it's North America only?

Looks like you're right Very Happy and the App seems to have good reviews, though I'm a little worried about the Postcode Search bit.

Now, if I'm going to go for this it probably makes sense to do it while it's reduced, even if I can't get the traffic yet. I'll need a cradle that also charges though. I can't find that they do their own. Have I missed something?

Thanks for all your help.

7-Digit PostCode has been promised.

Navigon have announced a cradle but not powered, this is the cradle I use, works very well.

Ok, so if I'm going to go for this, this is my shopping list:-

The App
An adapter to plug the iPhone lead into the cigarette lighter
The cradle as above
Some other fixing to mount the cradle to the dash? How do I find out which one?

Hmmm I'm beginning to think it might be cheaper to buy a new TomTom Laughing

The cradle needs a Brodit ProClip car specific mount, check out www.dsldevelopments.co.uk.

I use a Griffin cable and cigarette lighter adapter. iPhone is very fussy about the chargers so simpler to get the kit and know it'll work, cable is also black so less obtrusive!

If I put all the apps I have on the iPhone for navigation in the order I rate them its as follows:

1/ Navigon (It simply works the best IMHO)
2/ Sygic (Best for Speed Cameras from PGPSW if JailBroken)
3/ CoPilot Live (decent software at a bargain price)
4/ I-Go (Takes ages to load but otherwise its OK)
5/ TomTom (very basic in comparison to the others)
6/ G-Map (nice app but strange routes and prone to crashing)

Fot the car holder I use nothing but Brodit kit, OK so its not the cheapest but why try putting a £500+ phone in a cheap holder? For some information on installing this sort of kit to the car try This link - Whilst the car will probably differ to yours, the same principles to installing the kit will apply. Try and go for a Pro-Clip that puts the iPhone near the top of the dashboard, this improves GPS reception which is vital with the iPhone, mounting it low as per the linked thread does produce poor reception, I have since moved the iPhone mount and its much better for signal reception.

Another iPhone related issue using it for GPS based navigation in the car is one of volume, again the iPhone simply isn't too loud and can be difficult to hear above the volume of the stereo and road noise when at speed, to overcome this I stream the audio from the iPhone to a device known as the iO-Play which is fitted to the car - a great gadget and I never have issues hearing the nav instructions or the music, phone calls are also routed via the car speaker system, as a handsfree kit its great, add in the A2DP audio streaming for music and nav instructions and it works very well see Here for additional information - Mike

I use a satnav on my iphone every day... sometimes to get somewhere... and sometimes just to keep me company at 4am when I pick up the wayward teenagers from nightclubs Smile I just love the TTS from navigon Smile

I have had the following apps, and I rate them in this order:

1. navigon
2. sygic
3= igo and copilot

I use a recent griffin roadtrip to both power and hold my iphone. It also transmits on FM very clearly. It works a treat with just one caveat... which is you'll need the ipod app / some music playing as well as the voice instructions, as after about 1 minute of silence, the roadtrip turns itself off.

Looking forward to live traffic and 7-digit postcodes on navigon... but still very happy with it... the routes it chooses on 'optimal' are very similar to the ones I would have personally chosen.
