TomTom at the WWDC talked about "“enhanced GPS performance” with their iPhone dock and that "this is important".

Can anyone clarify what they meant by this?

I'm wondering if the GPS in the iPhone sucks. It gets a rough position (using GSM/WiFi) really quickly and that's pretty cool and useful but I'm not convinced about it's abilities as a navigation device. I found that my iPhone wouldn't work well at all on the Eurostar/TGV. The train has coated windows but the Garmin Nuvi worked just fine and got a fix from cold in a few minutes

Anyone have any comments on this?

As far as I can make out the TomTom holder will have a GPS enhancement in it .

As regards the Iphone GPS reception I have no trouble at all connecting to sats ,at present time I am using Navigon on my Iphone and I have never lost a signal , even indoors I get a signal very quickly can't fault it .

I have posted quite a few times about the poor GPS sensitivity with my 3G 16GB iPhone, its far less capable than any other PDA based device I own that has built in GPS capability.

That said the application can have a bearing on how poor the GPS reception appears to be, again today I used Navigon for the outward trip and once we were under the trees in the countryside the reception was pathetic (I have now put the iPhone up level with the top of the dash in an attempt to improve poor reception) - For the return trip I used Sygic and didn't encounter any issues with lost signals even when under the trees. Draw your own conclusion from this but Sygic is able to hold on to the signal when the going gets difficult where Navigon packs in with a red bar denoting no reception.

I can understand TomTom wanting to supply an external receiver/ car holder and speaker as these are all areas requiring address:

1/ The built in GPS is far from good.
2/ The built in speaker isn't loud enough in any car.
3/ A phone used for navigation should be secured within the vehicle.
4/ An incomming call bins the nav application as the phone takes over.

Put the first three points together and you can see why TT want to supply a mount that overcomes these issues - I would much prefer Apple to update the OS to include the Serial Port Profile (SPP) within the Bluetooth capability of the phone to give users a choice as to what they can use, there are some very capable sub £20 BT receivers available these days but you cannot use them if the iPhone doesn't support SPP.

They (Apple) should also address item 4 by giving us the option to kill the phone while the GPS is in use - switching to Flight mode is useless as that also kills the built in GPS - It will be interesting to see what the iPhone does with the external receiver, but my set up requires Bluetooth live to overcome the poor speaker, I feel more set up options are required now that the iPhone is growing up - Mike

Hello I currently have the Brodit setup for my Go720 in the same upper position in my car. I have looked at the Brodit site but there are many options which one have you got there. Sometimes I have my iPhone in a serpent case and other times no case. Is there one to suit both scenarios?

Sorry to the OP for going slightly off-topic.

I have 16GB model and the GPS when using google maps was terrible but last week I followed Navigon iPhone Help advice and backed up, erase all data and settings and restored. I used google maps the other day as a passenger and it worked great! So I'd advise following navigons help section advice.

This is the one I am using, very good holder adjusts to any size save's you taking your phone out of the case , rather exspensive but well worth the money.
