The Lake District Premium map pack offers the best compromise as you get 50K and 25K scale maps on the same card, but if you don't go there too often I would stick with the 50K only Cumbria map pack (Thats all I use for the Lakes, great place but over commercialised IMHO) for the Yorkshire Dales I splashed out on the £99 Premium map pack as I prefer that region, walk there more often, so it was worth the extra cost to get the additional detail that 25K offers.

You can certainly get around without an issue using the 50K scale, consider the scale choice similar to the purchase of a car:

Two cars one costs £8K the other costs £40K but they both get you to work - Mike

I think it depends on what sort of biking/walking you intend to do - if it is on fairly unadvenerous stuff then 1:50K will be OK, but off the beaten track then probably 1:25K - though maybe a 1:25K paper map for backup/planning with 1:50K on satmap would be a cost effective way

You might want to look at the satmap.com store as they also do a premium Lakedistrict (1:25K + 1:50K on same card) for £99

Another good reason to be able to 'rent' for a week or so.

What do you mean by "off the beaten track" wrt mountain biking? Hopefully not off the bridleways - which isn't permitted.

Walking off the beaten track is allowed in areas of Open Access and these areas are shown in shaded light brown on the 1:25k maps only, along with walls so you can navigate around them or find likely gates or stiles. This is the big advantage of the 1:25k maps in my opinion.

I still can't justify the expense though (I walk in most areas, and it'd be prohibitive to get them all) so I plan open access walks using the route planner at 1:25k and use that route on the Satmap using 1:50k GB maps. Occasionally I'll print off troublesome looking areas @ 1:25k from the Route Planner so that if I don't find a gate I can see where the walls go and adjust the route accordingly. Obviously this isn't as easy as having the 1:25k on the unit, but it is much cheaper and worth the effort in my case.

To be honest - I was mainly thinking of walking with the comment - but when you get into less popular areas where the paths become less distinct on the ground and easier to make mistakes.

The 1:25K are expensive - so I would only consider them when I going to be going to a lot of use

The other option, to keep the price down, is to think of getting Satmap to make only the portion of the Lakes, or any other area, that you really want in 1:25. I did this when I looked at the Snowdonia National Park....so much of it, for me, was off the beaten track. Or even look at the county maps which again may give you what you want. This actually works both ways as I had Satmap increase their standard South Downs map to include where I live and expanded to cover my typical walking areas. Hope this may help in future.

yes, don't forget that Satmap can create custom 1:25k maps for you if you don't want all of an off-the-shelf map.
