Hi Mike, I've read that developers are happily using A2DP to stereo bluetooth headsets via pre-release versions of OS 3.0 on existing 3G hardware, so I guess that's a yes!

TomTom have a teaser landing page on their global site, showing an outline of a cradled iPhone - this is clearly 'big' news for them.

'Magnetic compass'

Get ready for 300 varieties of compass apps to go with the 300 varieties of spirit levels you've already had the misfortune of wading through. Oh bore!

Let's hope TT fully encompass the connected nature of the iPhone and enable HD Traffic and other LIVE Services upon it.

On a now locked thread the following was posed was posed:

The TomTom announcement at the WWDC said it has IQ Routes (but very little else at this time - 'latest maps', whatever that means). I'm certain they'll be selling a zillion add on services - OS 3.0 allows in-app purchases, so why wouldn't they?! Besides, I get the impression this is a big deal for TomTom (they're the partner of choice for 40 Million devices that don't yet have Turn-by-Turn) so I suspect they'll pull out all the stops. Any serious turn-by-turn would have to include some kind of live traffic info (well, it would for the UK at least!). The iPhone is THE platform for accessing external data and the OS3 app store could hardly be more supportive.

How good they are with map updates remains to be seen (painful Palm Navigator user here!).

I'm just praying we get to download maps and run them without the NEED to connect to a Network.

I know what you mean. At least Apple are incorporating a compass app into the 3GS, so it will discourage developers from releasing identical functionality. But then someone will come up with a better alternative and you're stuck with two compass apps - you can't remove the default Apple apps! I wish they'd addressed that in the new OS. I don't mind the storage space, but the springboard space is precious and I really don't want to have to work with things I don't use.

{sigh} Nothing's ever simple, is it?! Wink

Unsurprisingly, O2 aren't offering a generous upgrade path for 3G owners.

'Upgrade

If you're already with us on Pay Monthly, you can upgrade to the new iPhone 3G when it's time to upgrade. It's usually the last month of your contract, but you can check at My O2.' Here.
Don't quote me on it, but I think the 3GS pricing options look more expensive also, despite the US pricing being the same as the original 3G.

I'm sure it will stick to the windscreen and hold the iPhone in place no matter what app you're running... but I suspect that's not quite what you meant!

While the TomTom factor is a major step forward, are the device differences that significant?

I'm starting to itch, just a little.
