New software needed

I Have a Mitac 168 with TomTom navigator v6 installed. I believe that no more map updates are available. Could someone recommend a good (cheapish) software alternative.

Welcome to the forum, have a look at McGuider the maps are far more up to date than the TT product you are currently using and the menu interface is nearly the same so its easy to switch to it - Mike

I'd re-iterate what Mike has suggested, McGuider is very good, otherwise I'm a big fan of NavNGo iGO.

Just had a look at NavNGo iGO. Coudn't see any uk distributers, or doesn't it matter and was I looking in the right place?

I have tried both igo8 and mcguider on the Mio168 abeit not long tests but my impressions are that igo is far more complicated to use than Tomtom and appeared to be slower on the mio, Mcguider is simpler and is more than adequate to do the job and if you are a TomTom fan then Mcguider is the one to go for, but I am not sure if the recently released Mcguider 2009 will run on the Mio168 perhaps requiring Win6.

To Add, dont be tempted by the 3d buildings on Igo8, i am almost certain it will drain the the Mio,s win2003 or win2003se Os if you have upgraded to a stop and make it unusable

Yo be fair, the Mio168 is rather long in the tooth now so yes, newer apps may struggle to run on it.

iGO runs perfectly on more powerful devices now available.

Ok then lets say the Mio 168 "might" struggle with new apps. What would people recommened?

A newer PDA
or
A standalone sat nav system (would you be able to add poi's/speed cameras to this and add new maps eg USA)

If a standalone satnav system, which one?

Do you use it for anything other than navigation? if not then a standalone PND is my recommendation.

I used to use it with Memory Map when I was out cycling but I found the battery didn't last long enough so now use a garmin forerunner for that purpose.

Budget. Well really as cheap as possible (but it has to the the job) as the missus will see it as yet another unnecessary gadget) even though the mio 168 with tomtom has saved a lot of arguments whilst traveling.

It would need to be upgradeable (maps) and also the ability to add safety cameras etc

All TomTom's and Garmin's support speed cameras. The requirement for adding US maps precludes the cheaper Tomtom ONE models though. I'd suggest a TomTom x30 model. Do you need Europe coverage?

As USA mapping might be needed later on I would take a look at This which covers full Europe and can take the USA maps on SD/ SDHC cards at a future point. Once updated with the latest application and map it is the same device as the 730 but for around half cost - Mike

Don't need european (or USA) coverage at the moment but you never know

TomTom 530 then, UK maps but has an SD card slot so is easily upgraded, expanded at a later date.
