Hopefully the tom should be winging its way from Amazon within the next couple of days..

However this has been somewhat of a fraught time -- Never had any problems with Amazon before -- but this time I ordered and thought it was OK --but then had an email saying they had had difficulty with my payment and could I re verify !! so I did..
again and again and again

5 times in all -- but then the emails stopped and I thought it was OK..

Till the next day when I had the banks Fraud Squad on to me asking if I had ordered 5 Tom-toms !!!

To day I was on to Amazon -- in the Philippines requesting that my order be sorted -- which they did and sent me an email --- great
5 mins later -- Bank Fraud squad-- did I order this -- yes -- OK they said just checking...

Hopefully we MIGHT just get the new 740... by the 21st !!!

However -- better safe than sorry... glad they are on the ball !

Maurice

The PGPSW are more accurate but I do like the way the TT SPECS warnings handle the whole SPECS zone and your speed in it rather than just the camera points. It is a shame that they do not open up this facility for third party warnings.

They have to have some reason to choose them! Their data isn't it so keeping the bells and whistles to themselves is all they can do.

Does this mean that the TT actually calculates your average speed right throughout the zone and warns you to reduce your speed if it exceeds that limit? Or does it simply gong you throughout the zone that the speed limit is whatever? Either way, if they are not accurate, the benefit is dubious.

Back to MY subject !! the 740....

My new 740 has arrived == and transfered all Poi's etc and done all the updating --

But has any one any Idea where the Favourites are stored -- what folder??
on my old Classic -- or will I just have to enter them all again...

so far so good -- although it seems to be taking ages to charge... when plugged into the PC -- is this normal..??

Got the Pro clip thing fitted in the VOLVO -- great.. very neat..

Thanks Mike-- Just took it out for a drive...

Just a little disappointed that the maps of 4 years "still" haven't been up dated -- but I do like it over the classic !!

connected to Tom tom Home --with great intrepidation...

and the first thing it (TTH) asked [told me] that my map was out of date and to download a new one -- OK its free in the first 30 days ---

Took nearly 20 mins to down load -- had to switch of the hibernation on the computer or it would have switched of - it was downloading so slow [I am on 10 gb broad band -- but!!]
Any way downloaded and then disconnected correctly etc -- and tried to start Tom --- no way -- got to splash and held -- then went off -- came back to splash -- and held -- kept on doing this
-- OH sh**t I thought -- I wonder if there is a Paper-clip hole ?? No couldn't see one -- tried holding down the ON button for 15 secs and it came up with a load of small print... couldn't read it but it looked like info about TOM..

Tried again -- got it working --- yuck only two maps --- UK and Vatican.. do I need to visit the Pope !! you bet !!!

Switched off and started again -- got maps - no voices --- loaded computer voice and it seems now [fingers crossed] to be working..

I think there is a worry in all this -- that it was working --then I downloaded -exactly as told -- and then it wasn't working ..

Not good for the heart..

apart from all this -- done a road test and getting used to it -- will have to learn the voice commands -- the instruction book is particularly USELESS for any problems..

To reset your device you need to press and hold the on/ off switch untill the device boots up with a drum roll sound, it can take more than 30 seconds depending upon what the unit is doing.

Make sure you fully back up the device using Windows Explorer to your PC - even if you did this when if first came out of the box, please do it again as your map is new and its the only copy you will have - the back up will save you the hastle of downloading it again (even if it lets you, which is another issue).
If you don't know how to make a back up using Windows Explorer take a look at the FAQ page in the sticky threads at the top of this forum index, it is number one on the list - Mike

Thanks for that Mike -- Have now done -- first of all unchecked the bits in the Windows Explorer View options.. as per the FAQ's

I made a folder on my desk top "740 backup" and pasted them in to that..[I can move it later - into my TOM-TOM folder..

1.78GB -- 934 files -- took just under 5 Min's -- and to think it took 20 Min's to download and copy the map !!!

I hope I never need it.. Embarassed

Better safe than sorry though.. Very Happy

My next problem is trying to get the voice actuation to work???

It probably don't like my voice..
Or are there some specific "words" that you have to use?

I would - say like to go to a house in a street in a nearby town

How would I go about "instructing" Tom to do this??

Sorry for being a pain -- but this is ALL new to me..

Maurice

It doesn't like my voice but I can still get it to work! the actual words it can recognise are indeed fixed and there is a long list to memorise!

Switch the device on and go to Change Preferences/ Voice Control Preferences/ What can I say? and all the different commands are listed - it will only let you use these - Mike

Aren't you lucky. 4 or 5 hours is considered good for most of us.

No and No.

You CAN backup using HOME but we always advise you don't and instead take a full backup using Explorer to a folder on your PC.

Time after time HOME has let users down when they needed to restore.
