Hi AndyVaughan
When I mentioned that I thought it maybe a Hardware problem I should have said a combination of hardware/software problem.

I think we can all agree that we all have the same software from Tomtom, so it must be identical. And we all have the same devices (mine’s a 720). Now, the way I see it is that some users are using options (Bluetooth, IQ Routing, Street names etc) and others are not. If that was to be the cause then that would mean the device was not man enough to handle the software/workload. I haven’t used Hands free, Street Names etc and mine runs faultlessly.
However, I will select Street Names tomorrow and see what happens.

I have tried with everything disbaled - no BT, no additional POIs installed and all POIs disabled, no RDS-TMC, no mp3 playback etc. IQ routing on or off makes no difference. Unless TT made a hidden hardware revision change halfway through the production run I can't explain why some suffer and some don't. I have tried running off of the battery, off of the charger, dim the screen between instructions - believe me absolutely everything. The stutter always comes back, and the map lag is noticeable under all configurations I have tried. The worrying part is how quickly the free memory on the device drops, if you run 8.204 and compare you will see what I mean. Mine is a 920 so maybe the EPT makes some difference?

Similar to bluetooth you can see how much memory is being used by using the MP3 Player but again like bluetooth when quiting it the memory does not appear to get released.

Example that releases memory
Change to a nonTTS voice
1. Enable a TTS voice if you don't have one
2. Wait for a GPS fix and check memory
3. Click on the area to repeat a voice instruction so the TTS engine will get loaded into memory check memory to see how much that TTS voice is using.
4. Switch to a nonTTS voice
5. Click on the area to repeat a voice instruction so the nonTTS voice is used
6. Check memory for the final time and you will see that by switching memory has been freed.
7. Check free memory and you will see how much less a nonTTS voice is using and for the first time ever that the navcore is capable of releasing memory Shocked

Note: memory does always fluctuate a little and I think it has to do with the GPS signal and that is why I say wait until you get a fix.

P.S. Andy is probably correct in the EPT also using memory.

Logged a call with TTS on 24/11/08 about voice stutter - ticket number 3 081124-004769.

They advised re-installing the software which I did but no effect. Strangely this is the same 'fix' option they used when my phone connection stopped working.

The bluetooth handsfree only works when it feels like it - wish I had saved my money and bought a GO rather than a 720T

I have also joined there map update service and so far have seen no new maps - does this mean that their map service is like a number 9 bus... you wait for ages and then 3 come along at once!!

Let's make them sit up and listen!

Yes, if it is memory fragmentation / poor garbage collection then changing options would have no effect. It is not just what options you have set, but what options you have had set. I.e. not what you ARE doing but what you HAVE been doing that impacts the memory fragmentation. If you tried a clearflash AFTER turning off the options, that might show some different results, as it would be starting with unfragmented memory (presumably).

Just a thought ...

Reading Malouff's post again. What if there is no garbage collector? If these options are not releasing space, perhaps - until now - there was never a need to reclaim memory?

If so then the only 2 straightforward ways to clear memory are clearflash (ie. simulate a power off/on) or reload a new app. With the new app being a different size, etc., some memory clear process must be built into loading up a new version of the app for the first time.

Thinking about users who've switched back to 8.3 and been ok, *maybe* the ACT of INSTALLING the new app is what is fixing things, rather than what the app actually is?

Granted 8.3 and up seem to be too something (big, use a new memory manager, allocate memory differently, or ...) to cause the problem in the first place. But everyone has success with the new app, almost regardless of 8.3x version, for some period of time until the performance problems hit again. But just maybe reloading a new version of app just resets the clock for you for a while ...

Just a though.

Once again... it seems not to be that simple. Crying or Very sad

If I am running mp3s over Bluetooth and get severe screen lag, I can cure it instantly by disabling Bluetooth - no switch off or re-boot required.

I'm not too sure memory management is the issue here - the usual probs with poor memory management (sometimes known as MS W*nd*ws) are crashes. Don't the x20/x30 devices have some form of UNIX kernel - so there will be some rudimentary memory management going on. Also not reclaiming unused memory until it is needed is actually quite an efficient way to handle memory.

I had a few stutters on 8.300 and tried Mike's 8.320 as a "solution" - I don't have stutters any more but I also now use BT via the car radio - so no phone is connected to my 720. The problem feels more like available processor speed is the issue. I could imagine this sort of response if the system is overloaded with interrupt style processing. I guess there are some internal events that need instant response and these are getting in the way of the other processing.

Yes, it’s a puzzle. Its even more of a puzzle when you take into account that some users (including myself) suffer no stutter or screen lag. I have a strong suspicion that it’s also a puzzle at Tomtom HQ. If it only needed a software patch I’m sure that they would have sorted things by now.
After three months I think we can presume that the Captain of the ship at Tomtom must be getting impatient with his crew.
After all, no one likes bad publicity.
