Best memory card?

I have just upgraded to TomTom Navigator 3, at present I have the full UK map on my storage card. The card is a Pretec 128mb SDC2.

I would like to put the full UK map and also the map of europe on to one card.

What would be the best card to buy and whee to buy from?

probably a 512 sd card david w has a comparison chart available from the link part if this site i belive the pannasonic ones are very good and ive had no problems with a 256 lexar after i formatted it using the storage tools software (sorry i havent put the link in but im usless at it ask darren Laughing

My latest SD card recommendations are usually floating around in the forums. Basically, you want to avoid anything made by Sandisk, and ideally buy something made by Panasonic, or failing that, Toshiba.

Most brands, including Lexar, rebadge various cards - I remember when Lexar switched about 15 months ago from Toshiba to Sandisk, and people went from raving about them to raving at them...

Things are changing all the time, but if you email [email protected] and enquire after a SD card made by Panasonic, they should be able to help you. I think they still have some Panasonic made 512MB Integral cards (works out at around 100 pounds) and I believe the 256MB Dane-Elec XS card is also Panasonic (around 55 pounds). Don't just order and hope - email them first to check.

For 256MB, clove.co.uk have some SimpleTech Pro-X, which seem to be Toshiba (slightly slower than Panasonic, but the read speed is pretty much the same - it's the read speed that matters most).

You get what you pay for I'm afraid.

I can personally recommend a Lexar 32X 256mb SD card - these are Japanese made and are very fast. Many users on these forums have purchased them with excellent results. I paid £45.78 all in.

BTW - it has to be High speed (32X) - ordinary ones are possibly re-badged Chinese made Sandisks - and could well be problematic 8O

Sorry to sound thick, but just what is the problem with Sandisk?

Unfortunately, it's not currently possible to talk about technical details - the reason is on the site I mentioned.

What we can talk about publicly is what the user experience is - this doesn't require any inside knowledge. As Jon's site shows, in some Pocket PCs Sandisk SD cards corrupt horribly - the later N type are better than the earlier ones, but still aren't perfect. The Sandisk Ultra cards seem better still - but are still not quite right.

Even if a Sandisk card doesn't corrupt in your machine, they are often much slower than other manufacturers, and can cause all manner of software malfunction. There are numerous posts in the forums from people whose systems improved no end when they switched away from a Sandisk made SD card.

Other Sandisk memory products appear fine - I used a Sandisk MMC in a Nokia Communicator for some years, and never had any problems.

More generally, all is not equal in the SD card playing field. Most people buy based on price, but there's considerable performance difference between cards of the same capacity. As the route planning performance of your system in particular can depend on the speed of access to the map data on your memory card, it's worth seeking out the better quality, faster cards.

With a little effort, it is possible to track down the faster cards, and they're not that much more expensive than slower ones these days. You can now get a Panasonic made 512MB card for around 100 pounds.

I'm using a 512mb SD card made by Kingston.

Comes with a 3 year guarantee and was under £80 delivered from ebuyer.

It certainly eems quick, but I have no experience to compare it with.

It was recommended as fairly quick for watching movies from.

I am more than happy with it so far.

I got a Kingston 512MB too. Off Ebay from a US seller named 'Macimez'. Cost was about £44 + £10 to deliver & insure to UK. He seems to sell loads of them, they go for around £40-55 depending on bidding.

Got the warranty wrong. It's actually 5 years, but is not worldwide from my understanding (what kingston told me).

Therefore any bought in the states has no warranty in the UK Sad

Five-year world-wide warranty according to packaging that came with mine (even gives return addresses in China, Taiwan and Middlesex!). :D

When I checked with them (kingston), as I considered getting it from the states, the item has to be returned via the country of purchase with proof of purchase as the serials are logged. You apparently have to get an RMA and this is when the location of distribution is identified.

They do have worldwide service centres, but only for items purchased in those countries.

I decided the risk was not worth it as getting things sorted through ebayer's is usually too much hassle. I have been through this with a memory stick recently and the aggro was unbelievable Sad

as it had to go back via the US. It took 3 months to resolve it in the end.
