Whilst checking the GPS settings on the Active 10 I noticed something which puzzled me.

There is a box entitled "Position Display Format" which ( apart from foreign entries ) contains OSGB and British Grid.

Now I was under the impression that OSGB was a map datum and not a position format like British Grid. Therefore you really need to enable both,OSGB to provide the datum and British Grid as the position format.

This is reinforced by checking with my Garmin 60CS where you do just this,in fact it sets OSGB automatically when British Grid is selected as the Position Format.

Is my thinking correct and have SatMap made an error or is it "allowed for" somewhere deep in the software ?

Strictly speaking, the datum is OSGB36, OSGB is often used to refer to the co-ordinate system with the two prefix letters and BNG refers to the all numeric system.

It is up to you. If you prefer to use a 'normal' Grid Ref. i.e. SS123123 use OSGB, this identifies the 100K square you are in using the two letters. If you use British Grid the 100K square is 'built in' to the number and the first figure of easting and northing identifies that square. It is the small figure of the grid number at the corner of the map.
