Isnt it strange how all of a sudden lots of ebay sellers are selling the Zumo ,Halfords has dropped it from its range and Garmin for a very short while had mention of a Zumo 660 on their web page that disappeared as fast as it arrived.

Are we expecting a new motorcycle friendly GPS from Garmin ?

Question

There have been some rumours circulating and it does seem likely that a new motorcycle friendly GPS is imminent. From what I can gather it is a similar to the previously launched bike friendly nuvi but in a wide-screen format so not a hard core Zumo like we have been used to.

This all looks interesting. I expect a new model will be announced at CES 2009, next week Smile

It looks like a wide screen Nuvi 550, with LH screen controls to suit motorbikes.

It could be that Garmin figure that the Nuvi 550 is a good bike gps in a good form factor, but lacks the bells and whistles of the Zumo 550.

So they are looking to bring out a newer model in the bike range.

However they can't call it a Nuvi 660, as there used to be a Nuvi 660, which is now discontinued, so they are going to call it a Zumo even thought the form factor is clearly Nuvi.

This is good news for Bikers, as it adds to the range, plus should see a drop in new and S/H prices of current Garmin bike GPS models ?

Some more rumours about the Zumo 660:
http://www.fjrforum.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=113497

Quote:
It'll be thicker than a regular Nuvi (the Nuvi 550 is also thicker, because it is waterproof) and has a widescreen display and so it is physically larger.

Some features he expects:

1. powered mount, supplied with both car and bike mounts like the present Zumo 550
2. every software feature available in the present Nuvi units except voice control - including lane assist and building outlines
3. removable battery and long (8 hour) battery life
4. unfortunately, he expects it to have the TI Bluetooth chipset - which means that the old Zumo's Bluetooth is likely to be better than the new one's.
5. watch for prices on Zumo 550 to drop - the 450 was discontinued a month ago.
6. he expects this model will accept all of their maps including topo and marine - it has an SD slot
7. faster processor

One benefit to the new Zumo is that it will fit nicely in your pocket where the Zumo 550 was a pig - thick and not a rectangle.

Here is the Garmin link:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=135&pID=15000

Wide screen
Lane assist
Next turn + time + actual speed display while on a route
Stereo over bluetooth
Display quickest & fastest route for you to decide which one to use.

On the USA site it's about $160 cheaper than the Zumo 550, so it'll be interesting to see how the market values it here in the UK Smile
