Speed LimitersThe Commission for Integrated Transport (CfIT), has called for the voluntary use of driver-assistance systems in cars. They claim that fitting speed-limiting devices could prevent up to 29% of accidents that result in injuries.

The government advisory body reports that the benefits in introducing intelligent speed adaptation (ISA) would include helping to save lives and reducing carbon emissions. The system would bring local speed-limit information into the vehicle, automatically slowing it down to abide with the given limit for the current road it is travelling.

The devices will use GPS to check a vehicle's location within a speed zone. If it exceeds the speed limit, its power will be automatically reduced and the brakes applied if necessary. Something I'm not sure I'd be happy with if I was in the middle of an overtaking manoeuvre!

Also mentioned on BBC1 CEEFAX page 117

If they do decide to introduce such a system then I wonder where they are going to get the road speed database from and keep it up to date - the current speed limit data within the Navteq and TeleAtlas maps is far from good enough.

Yet another "wonderful idea" from a think tank with not much idea as to the practical elements in deploying such a system, or the associated cost - Mike

This is another of those pie in the sky news items which will never happen.

Given the requirement for someone to maintain accurate and up to date records of road speeds AND communicate these to the drivers of every car equipped with such a limiter it is a recipe for carnage.

Can you imagine a car travelling at 70 ahead that suddenly decelerates to 40 because it has out of date road speed data? Or the devices kicks in to bring your speed down as you are overtaking leaving you stranded in the outside lane?

Utterly impractical and foolish.

The speed limit data in the maps will need to be a lot more accurate before this will be viable. Expect a lot more accidents if a section of dual carriageway is incorrectly labelled as 30mph and your car automatically brakes from 70mph to 30mph. Shocked

I'm not normally a frequent poster in these forums but I feel strongly enough about this topic to say that the government that tries to bring this in will almost certainly commit political suicide...

Just look at what happened in Manchester recently with the majority vote against the proposed congestion charge.... Rolling Eyes

I believe current UK tests by Leeds University are using Navteq maps.

Everyone's comments about the what the public's attitude to ISAs will be reminded me about the 'usefulness' of the voluntary reaction one I witnessed in action last year in Dubai! Not ISA I grant you, but I bet the attitude will be similar.

There is also an increasing self-regulation by transport companies and taxis with the use of in-car speed warning alarms, usually triggered when 100kmph is reached.

Sounds a great idea in general, but the speed alarm in the taxi I used yesterday drove me nuts – not only did the driver have no regard for the speed limit, he appeared to have no regard for the constantly repeated ‘boings’ that, given a longer journey, would have driven even the most patient of men to murder. He did however slow down for the many cameras. If anything, at least the presence of the cameras managed to afford some relief from the bells!

On the subject of Dubai (and George Orwell) you might also be interested in the following:
IBM to equip all UAE cars with GPS and tracking device ... "the devices will monitor drivers' activities and broadcast them to government agencies".

This would probably mean we would end up with the same stupid 'elephant racing' situation that we get on dual-carriageways between lorries all limited to the same speed but this time with with cars.

One car almost at the limit pulls out to overtake another car doing the speed limit and they sit side by side for mile after mile. Wonderful.

Sounds like another recipe for sending drivers to sleep.

I've got to say that as long as the system is voluntary and can be switched off when necessary (like when trying to pass a lorry or caravan when the road is narrowing from 2 to 1 lane, or overtaking tractors on country roads) I'm actually in favour.

Never again would you have to worry about being caught speeding for a moment's lapse of concentration; the government would make no money from speeding fines; and the police could actually do the job they are paid to do, i.e. catch criminals as opposed to bullying otherwise law-abing motorists.

I for one am getting sick of seeing mobile camera vans every time I put my foot down...

as someone who drives with a speed limiter ona daily basis this will NOT save any lives it will cost them 10 years after they were made compulsery in hgv and busses there has not been one single study to asces whether or not they have done anything to improve road safety.

also it will make drivers even more lazy then they are now as they wont have to worry about what speed they are doing any one road. this is dangerous as drivers will drive to the speed limiter and not the conditions

So what happens when the US government decides to turn off (or reduce the accuracy of) GPS ? Are we then OK to not bother decelerating into a slower speed limit as we are assuming the car will do it automatically ? The first court case on this would be most illuminating !

hey, look at it this way - you'll never get a speeding fine again even when you DO speed! just claim that the system that the government wanted you to use must have gone faulty so it they who should pay the £60 and accept the points :D

What happens when the brakes are used to slow you down and you forget to change gear I for one wouldn't like my car to stall in the middle of a junction/road Rolling Eyes

More dangerous would be your car slowing from 70 - 40 and the eastern european artic behind you not paying attention
