so it seems when it plans a route it completely ignores the current traffic situation which is fine if you are planning a route for the future but not so clever if you are planning a route just before you set off

If you select Leave Now and check the traffic box it should give the current Traffic situation. My experience is it does not show Traffic for future journeys, but presumably will base the route on IQ Routes experience.

yes, good point but since the default position is 'Leave Now' why was it trying to send me (theoretically) down a closed road

I notice that their latest up to date maps are still out of date.

The Enfield Town one way system changed over a year ago now, with a new extension to Genotin Road which can be seen on Google maps but still not on TT's.

This is not a problem for those that know the area. I have, as I am sure many have, reported this but still no joy.

I realise the average time is up to a couple of years for changes to filter through but I still dont get why it has to take this long.

These sort of inaccuracies are one of the reasons satnav's get a bad press for sending drivers down the wrong roads. Having said that it is still no excuse to argue that the satnav sent me there so it must be right, as this sort of error proves.

"TomTom's RDS-TMC service used iTIS TMC data. TomTom's HD Traffic service is radically different and a lot more reliable and accurate using real-time data".

I am gonna disagree here, for god knows how long everytime i hit my home icon from Gatwick to Seaford i get a message saying 52 minute delay, would i like to reroute?
The roadworks at Beddingham have long been finished, and on every occassion i have ignored the advice. The subsequent delay has been non existent. I ask just how good is this traffic info?

Like I say, just check out the BBC live jam cams and you will see for yourself just how reliable it is! Confused

Be careful how you put this. The Genotin Road extension can be seen on the satellite (aerial?!) photos that accompany Google Maps, but the maps themselves still show the old road layout. Not very surprising as they use the same data source as TomTom for creating the maps.

Having said that, I think this particular road change has actually been in place for over 2 years - it's a long while since I visited Enfield, but I remember being surprised by the new layout - so it's high time that TomTom/Google/TeleAtlas caught up.

If you look a little higher up this page you will see my comments about planning a route from Wiltshire to Aston in Birmingham.

Well yesterday my wife drove that route return using my 540 Live. As she headed northbound between J4a and J3 of the M5 she could see that on the opposite carriageway a vehicle and trailer had overturned blocking off 2 lanes and causing a 4 -5 mile tailback.

When my wife was ready to return, about an hour after she had passed this, she activated the 540 for the return journey. This suggested she should return back down the M5 through the jam but made no mention of it whatsoever on HD Traffic.

She phoned me, I checked the traffic both on Trafficmaster and TT's own HD site and both still showed significant delays. Eventually she returned via the East of Birmingham i.e. around the M42 and so missed it all.

.....but, it's a bit odd that the accident was clearly still there, that it was being shown on TT's own HD page but not being reported through the satnav. Confused

HD traffic seems to be really good when it works, but just how often does it work?

I have just been playing with the online route planner.

As others have said, IQ Routes does not give enough effect to the data. i.e it suggests I can do a route in 1hr1m at 3 am, and it will only take me 3 mins more in 5pm traffic - clearly not right.

In additon, if I select minimise traffic it will give me a route and say that the traffic delay is 3-4 minutes.

I assume that this is the delay over and above the IQ routes - Ie traffic is slowing me down a lot more the 3 mins on my journey. It also give me a route, which according to the map is straight through a 5.1 mile tailback on the M5 when there are numerous alternatives - are others finding this also?

It does seem to have a strange idea of where Hull is. If you route from Kingston upon Hull, Hull to York you get the route you were after.

Although it can find Kingston upon Hull in "Find a location" it will not route from there unless you add ,Hull to the end.

Tomtom make me laugh (or cry). At the bottom left of the screen it says, Are your maps up to date? No, but neither are theirs, well at least the one they're using for the planning.

If you don't like that planner, here's another.

Laugh or cry does not come into it, I just get angry, I have submitted changes and suggested updates to maps over the past year, and on some occasions having had to duplicate them due to new map releases, all to no avail. However I have noticed that, having followed your link to the BBC TransportDirect site that the maps are, from what I have seen up to date in relation to some of the locations I have submitted to both TomTom and Teleatlas. Sad
