Just wondering if this menu item is still greyed out on the x40 devices. Does anyone have a clue what this feature is supposed to do? Is it about selecting typ of vehice - passenger car, truck, caravan?

No, it was meant to deal with built in TT devices as I understand it but has never been activated by TT in any firmware.

Now that would have been a worthwhile update for Tom Tom to have introduced... in conjunction with IQ routing, which at the moment is a waste of time with my motorhome... hence my preoccupation with the itinerary feature... 
Imagine the extra market share Tom Tom would have acheived, if they could have advertised that you could select your vehicle type/size,, then used IQ routes to calculate to keep LGVs/HGVs out of the narrow lanes... every transport company and largish vehicle driver would want one.

Yes, and it wouldn't be that difficult to implement either. It's just a matter of adding a few checkboxes in planning preferences, e.g. "Always plan truck routes", "Always plan passenger car routes", "Always avoid low bridges", "Always plan taxi routes". That would be make the product even more useful for professional drivers and drivers that are restricted to certain roads. |

Have you noticed these days you get far more lorries on narrow country lanes which must be down to Sat navs?

If only it WERE that simple, don't you think all the satnav makers would have done it by now?
Sure it's easy to add the checkboxes, but what do they *do*? |

Oh yes, not to mention HGVs and coaches going down Whitton Ave East and West in Greenford because they are trying to duck and dive the A40.
The roads aren't wide enough, houses and schools either side.
They don't need to travel that route to get to the Industrial sites in Greenford/Perivale.

Not a bad idea!
When I ride past on the Trumper every day, I see the door/wing mirrors hanging off the parked cars.
If I lived there I would be on to the council to get the road restricted or something.

Most of the data needed for implementing these extra features should already be included in the maps via the road categories so I don't see the problem. Ok, avoiding low bridges requires a POI list of bridges, but I'm sure TomTom could collect that information easily.

Now I appreciate that the earlier devices (prior to the x10 series) had a car connect dock that could be used to wire the car headlights to the device and could also mute the radio.
But for the x10 and newer devices no such car connect has been available, there was an accessory mentioned at the product release of the x10 but it disappeared from the TomTom web site after a few months. This was supposed to have used Bluetooth for communication with the PND negating the need for extra wired and connections to the mount.
I fail to see why they are putting options in the software that require hardware support that simply isn't available - Mike |
