Because we're here to do it for you, and if you could do it yourself, I'd be out of a job. Wink

I believe I'm right in saying that there's some kind of issue that means it's not as easy as giving forum members the necessary rights to edit their own posts.

I suggest you preview before posting. In around 1700 posts before I had editing privileges, I think I only posted less than 10 messages that I subsequently found a mistake in.

Hi

I think I would agree with both Tim Buxton and David Wood. If you spend the time putting it together, and then preview it prior to posting why would you then want to edit it Question Question

It's very easy to make a mistake when typing and submit by accident. I generally preview it first but even then there are occasions when a mistake is made and overlooked. Or in some cases you decide when its submitted that you could have worded it better, or you realise you have omitted something... etc...
This can result in extra posts cluttering up threads.

It is very easy to allow members to edit their own posts:

From the 'Forum Admin', select 'Permissions', then from the Permissions Control select the forum, go to 'Advanced Mode' and enable post editing by selecting who can do it.

As it is simple to do I assume there is some other reason why it is disabled?

I'm not here to agree or disagree with anyone.

The ability to edit one's own posts would have it's advantages if not only for the reasons stated in my previous post. Not everyone is fortunate to have less than 1% errors in posts.

There are also, I presume, disadvantages hence the reason why editing is disabled (or not enabled depending on which way you care to look at it).

Also I forgot to mention, the job of a moderator is to ensure that posts are submitted to the correct forums and moved if in the wrong place, not duplicated, are not offensive, defamatory or derogatory.

Also they should have the ability to: lock a thread if its content becomes out of control for any of the above, delete offesnsve posts and in extreme cases ban persistent offenders.

A moderator is not a secretary to edit other members posts.

I'm sure you will all do a fine job and won't need to practice any of the above Smile

A moderator job is to change, move and edit topics. ;)

Editing posts would be an advantage, but what you have to understand is that this wasn't a phpBB forum from the ground up, we've merged between several different forums here. The database migration that we performed worked extremely well after gawd knows how many tests. It was a manual task to get the forum to where we see it today, but because it was a manual task, there were no nice scripts to help us migrate data across, some data has been mis-pointed and permissions screwed up. If we allowed you to edit your messages now, you would be able to edit some messages that other people have posted. Now that's not a good feature.

I know which messages are affected and we've just got to work around this to resolve the problem. We also have some mis-pointers in the database which are suggesting messages exist when they don't, and you can see this on a number of threads by going to the last page and it says no message exists.

Once we find we can spend a huge amount of time to iron out these problems, and we're happy that they have been resolved then we will open up editing and deletion of posts. I've been looking at it recently and I've spent a large amount of time re-setting all permissions across all forums which wasn't an easy task to make sure that everyone could still post whilst permissions were changing.

We'll get there, but just don't expect a change over night.

In the mean time preview before you post!

Thanks dave for the reasons the forum is the way it is.

As I said, "There are also, I presume, disadvantages hence the reason why editing is disabled (or not enabled depending on which way you care to look at it)" and your explanation has given a valid reason as to why editing is not currently allowed. Thumbs Up

Uh, if you read Dave's post you'll see why there is currently no edit permission.

Once these issues have been resolved we'll give edit permissions to all Thumbs Up
