Hi Darren, tried to catch up with you at the event today but you'd shot back to the office to write up this report, so I introduced myself to Mike instead. Much like HD traffic the Road Angel cameras on the X40 have been a bit hit and miss during the development/testing phase as we were refining the update processes - all should be well for the production products though.

Graham, my apologies, if I had realised you were present I'd have seized the opportunity for a char and intro Crying or Very sad

I'm intrigued by their
Quote:
Voice command and control
With safety in mind, the TomTom GO LIVE series features voice command and control in addition to existing safety options. For the first time, users can plan a route or make a phone call just by using their voice. Around 140 tasks can be activated by voice, so drivers can keep their eyes focused on the road ahead.

As the current application thereof on X20/X30 requires a bunch of taps to get to this feature and to finalise it, I shall watch to see how close the X40 comes to the above statement.

I have split all the HD Traffic Receiver Accessory discussion and moved to its own thread here as it's OT for this discussion.

We can't/won't review pre-production units so as soon as we get our hands on a retail model we'll get a review out.

Is there a side-by-side comparison for the x40 range? I'd like the FM transmitter and iPod control, but to pay £100 extra seems excessive. Sure, I get the US maps, but I don't need them thanks. For a premium range, I think moving the FM transmitter to the top only is a poor decision.

We're working on one, I'll get it ready and posted later this morning.

Thanks for the detailed report, Darren.

By seeing that the adhesive disk is available only for US & Canada as well as gas prices for the US, TomTom at least realizes there IS a North America. Confused

Thanks for posting the features table. You have "Fuel prices" as "US only", yet the video for them on the web site has London and Sainsburys shown.

That said, I think that the difference of FM transmitter, enhanced positioning technology, and US maps is nowhere near worth £100. And given no FM transmitter, the only difference between the 540 and 740 is the maps. The cost difference is £50, and buying the Western Europe map would be £79, but unless you know you'll use it this year, you'll be wanting to update it later which would cost you another £30 anyway. The US map would cost £69 as well.

The value proposition is poor for the higher end models I think.

(I'm ignoring the internal memory because that is dirt cheap on SD card anyway.)

As i posted on here somewhere before, it has been said that the x40 will run above the x30 range, but as stealthdevil pointed out the 930 is not showing on tomtom site as current models, and if you go to tomtom netherlands site none of the x30 range is showing as current models.
I feel sorry for people that have just bought the x30's. A friend bought the 730 as he was impressed with my 720, my 720 was over £100 cheaper than what he paid because they were superseded by the x30's (and mine was the 't' version his isn't) I have now updated the map due to the fact tomtom have done the offer of 12 months map updates, and now my 720 is identical to his at a reduced price.
Mind you tomtom are good at not telling people anything, I had a dispute about the latest map guarantee, and they kept telling me that I had used up the offer and if I wanted the latest map I would have to pay the 80 quid and giving me the link to the map shop, then a couple of days later they brought out the map update service offer, which only cost me about 40 - 50 quid.

The table is an extract from a master and is as provided (with other models removed) so the Fuel Price error is TomTom's! If you look further down you will see under LIVE Services that it is correctly listed as NL, UK, FR.

Given that the LIVE functionality does not permit roaming the I'd agree that the value proposition favours the base model!

Darren, at the beginning of this thread you said:

Also it is worth pointing out the the LIVE services will function ONLY in the country of purchase. There is no roaming agreement so they will not function if you venture outside the UK.

I regularly drive between UK, France, Belgium & Netherlands. Would I have to purchase 4 copies of LIVE services to get them working in all 4 countries?

If yes, that makes it a very expensive service.

You cannot use the LIVE services outside of the country in which you purchase your x40. The SIM is internal and will only function in that country, there is no option currently to allow you to use it elsewhere even if you were willing to pay.

Makes it pretty useless for people who drive across Europe. Well, I will have to struggle on with the 920T which is back a second time for repair. Twisted Evil
