Hi everybody Surprised

I badly need to get a new navigator (with European maps, as I travel a lot) and narrowed down to the new XL v2 22 and the "old" 720
They're both priced £150 at this shop:
http://www.handtec.co.uk/section.php/24/1/tomtom-sat-nav/4ed726b2970bc1765c2348b3ff3113ea

however I sent a mail asking if the 720 was refurbished and here the response I got, not really sure what that means
Quote:
Hi,

The Tom-Tom 720's are all manufactured repackaged (NOH).

which one should I get?
I couldn't care less about all those bells and whistles in the 720, however since they're priced the same....

oh another thing
why are maps so different in size between the 2 models?
is there anything missing in the one XL??

thanks

I'd get the 720. It has TTS, and with a map update to v8 and the free v8 update will give you ALG.

thanks a lot

mind if I ask you couple of questions.....yeah I'm a total newb
I dont know what does ALG stand for, however I do know about IQ routes in the x30 series.
Will I get that too? is the update done with Home?

I'm tempted to get the 720 but I'm very worried about it being a refurbished model Confused

I wouldn't be concerned about a refurb so long as the retailer honours the warranty. However as a refurb you are unlikely to get the Latest map Guarantee which would have entitled you to a free map update.

ALG and the IQ routes etc need the latest v8 map so that is an extra cost you will need to consider but once you have that and have updated to the v8 app you will have a device to all intents identical functionally to the x30.

ALG is Advanced Lane Guidance. You get on screen arrows showing which of the available lanes you must be in at a turn and on -screen representations.

hmm, I didn't consider that.
Maps are £99, that will go way out of my budget

I'll send another mail to handtec asking some more info in that regard

The map update is less than that, circa £50 or less if you sign up for the map update subscription service but the actual price depends on how old the installed map is on the device.

I'm a big fan of the 700 series of devices. The 730 is a great unit, and it had the advantage for a while (as it had the Advanced Lane Guidance and IQ Routes), but since they opened those features up to the older models, the 720 should be a solid buy for you.

Hi all, my very first post. I've been reading the forums for about a month now, just to get an idea of what I should buy. I'm still pondering, but just to point out that the above quote from Handtec is, to quote their site" Remanufactured by TomTom to Brand New Condition with 1 year manufacturers warranty"

I have very nearly purchased this, but there is one niggling thing in the back of my mind.
I have been looking at models and prices, and this morning was the first time i've seen the x40 series on their site. Surely now that that range are out and no doubt in public demand, the price of the x20 series will go through the floor?

Fantastic site. Keep up the great work.

Nik

Welcome! Always great to see a new face Smile

In time honoured TomTom tradition, the x40's are not yet available even though they may be listed on their website. They (the x40's) are also targeted at the business or high mileage user which TomTom see as a different market to the x30's (the x20's are already end of line).

Nothing to stop anyone buying an x40 of course but they will be sold at a price premium over the x30's and of course you need to take out a data subscription to use the LIVE functionality albeit at a very reasonable £9.99 per month.

Thanks for the fast reply Darren and John877. Yes I can see the logic behind what you are saying about the x40's. I really need to make a decision soon regarding buying, because I'm reading so much about different models, my head hurts! Shocked
On another note I've just been reading about all the different software problems with the x20's which I have to say is scary, but I suppose whichever forum you go to or whatever product you look for, you always find problems of some sort! Rolling Eyes
