pocketgpsworld.comSentinel, an Australian live content company has announced that it has begun live demonstration broadcasts of real-time traffic information via digital radio.

Working with Commercial Radio Australia, Sentinel plans to stream detailed traffic reports directly to satellite navigation devices. The service is the first live demonstration of such content delivered using digital radio technology and they hope to offer expanded content for motorists such as real-time petrol pricing and parking information.

Sentinel have chosen the TPEG standard (Transport Protocol Experts Group) for the delivery mechanism over digital radio with broadcasts scheduled to begin in Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth in the first half of 2009. The company has also recently released a GPRS-TMC server to server service to deliver information to sat-nav's and mobile phones. LIVE information services can be accessed at myDrive.com.au and via your mobile, see 197drive.com.au

Although digital radio was pioneered in the UK with DAB, it has had limited success to date with patchy coverage and poor signal being major obstacles to consumer take up. The US has seen major success with its two satellite radio services, Sirius and XM. Satellite radio is suited to countries with widely spread population centres as the infrastructure required for traditional radio broadcasts cane be dispensed with. It is perhaps surprising that Australia has not chosen a satellite solution.
