Comparing and evaluating the quality and features of hardware and software is a difficult activity, because you have deal with with data in a "living" market. You are writing for potential buyers. So the comparison is "the" most important factor. As for any hardware or software, what is “the best” of today might be less worth tomorrow already, compared to new products or updated versions.

In my humble opinion, only a permanent database of “life-quotations” of all the “variable” features could help sustain an updated comparison system. (Compare it to a stock market quote ; same life-evaluation system)

Look at the excellent comparison article you wrote about handhelds. It is one year old and probably outdated. Maybe it would be less work to maintaining a database with features and life-quotations for all the GPS handhelds , as to rewrite a static comparison review each year, which in the electronic business becomes outdated after a few months ?
