New technology which stops drivers breaking the speed limit is being tested.
The Government has fitted a dozen cars with restrictors and had them driven around Leicestershire to see how they affected people's driving.
In most cases, they found the motorists felt much safer, slowed more at junctions and paid more attention to pedestrians and cyclists when their speed was forcibly curbed by the device.
In a report, the Government said the system, which could soon be offered to drivers, could "drastically reduce" the number of accidents and deaths by ensuring a vehicle could not speed.
Civil servants chose Leicestershire as a testing area because it has wide range of rural, village, urban and major roads, including the M1 and M69. The cars used a gadget similar to a sat-nav unit, which knows where it is and how fast it should go in that area.

Highways expert Ian Drummond said the Department of Transport took the trials "very seriously".
He said: "All councils have been asked to provide an up-to-date inventory of speed limits on all their roads by the Government before 2011.
"There is a serious libertarian issue here. The system is likely to reduce accidents, deaths, congestion and even pollution. Remember, lorry drivers have had limiters for many years.
"But, at the same time, it also raises questions about giving drivers choice. My view is that, by 2020, this will happen."
Known as ISA, the system has been developed by a company in Leeds.
The Government said, as a result of the trials, it will work with manufacturers and councils to discuss how it could be rolled out.
However, a spokeswoman for the Department for Transport said there were no plans to "force" the technology on people. Instead, it would look for volunteers.
She said: "We are clear that any future use of ISA is taken forward by the motoring industry in response to consumer demand, just as with other technologies available for consumers to purchase if they so choose."
Some campaigners feared ISA could be forced upon the nation's drivers. Roger Lawson, of the Association of British Drivers, said: "This Government loves Big Brother legislation that lets it tell us what to do.
"If it was mandatory, it would be a pernicious erosion of civil liberties."
Limiters on vehicles are one of a raft of measures being examined by the Department for Transport.
It is also planning to allow the widespread use of cameras in built-up areas.
These would measure a vehicle's speed between two points, rather than as they pass a single camera, and are already in use on motorways.
There are 13 static speed, 10 red light and 65 mobile camera sites, plus three routes with a combination of all three, in the county.

1. Have a system where cars are restricted to the speed limits = No revenue.

2. Site more cameras everywhere = 'loadsa money'.

No 1. to come in by 2020? Yeah right!
