Press release: Unexplored Arctic Region to be Mapped

A scientific expedition this fall will map the unexplored Arctic seafloor where the U.S. and Canada may have sovereign rights over natural resources such as oil and gas and control over activities such as mining.

Screenshot of the Arctic Chronicles blog and journey tracker. Both countries will use the resulting data to establish the outer limits of the continental shelf, according to the criteria set out in the Convention on the Law of the Sea. The extended continental shelf, the seafloor and subsoil beyond 200 nautical miles from shore that meet those criteria, is an area of great scientific interest and potential economic development.

The expedition will be collaboratively undertaken by the U.S. and Canada using two ships. The U.S. Geological Survey will lead data collection from September 6-October 1 on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy to map the Arctic seafloor. The Geological Survey of Canada, Natural Resources Canada will follow Healy on the Canadian Coast Guard ship Louis S. St. Laurent (Louis) and study the geology of the sub-seafloor.

"The two-ship experiment allows both the U.S. and Canada to collect and share complementary data in areas where data acquisition is costly, logistically difficult, and sometimes dangerous," said USGS scientist Deborah Hutchinson, who will sail aboard Louis. "Both countries benefit through sharing of resources and data as well as increasing likelihood of success by utilizing two ice-breaker ships in these remote areas of the Arctic Ocean."

"Healy will utilize an echo sounder, which emits sounds signals in the water, to map the seafloor. This will be done using a multibeam bathymetry system," said USGS scientist Jonathan Childs, chief scientist on Healy during the September cruise. "Unlike conventional echo sounders, which measure the water depth at a point directly beneath the ship, the multibeam system collects a ‘swath' of depth information about 3 km wide along the ship's path, creating a three-dimensional view of the seafloor."

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration funded U.S. participation in the U.S.-Canadian mission and collaborated with the University of New Hampshire to collect bathymetric data in the Arctic Ocean on Healy from August 14-September 5.

Research is coordinated by the Extended Continental Shelf Task Force, a government-wide group headed by the U.S. Department of State. Participants in this Task Force include the USGS, NOAA, U.S. Coast Guard, National Science Foundation, Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Navy, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, Executive Office of the President, Minerals Management Service, and the Arctic Research Commission.

Press release: Archaeologist Maps Ancient Tombs in Oman with GPS-Photo Link

An archaeologist from Michigan State University is using GPS-Photo Link photo mapping software from GeoSpatial Experts to record the precise locations and conditions of ancient tombs in Oman. The researcher believes the tombs will provide insights into ancient peoples from the land once known as Magan, now northern Oman, in the Third Millennium B.C.

“We know relatively little about the cultures of Magan other than the fact that they lived in this area just south of Mesopotamia for about 800 years,” said Charlotte Cable, an archeology graduate student and researcher at Michigan State University. “By studying their tombs, we hope to learn about their culture.”

Cable traveled to Oman in early 2008 to locate Magan tombs, small tower-like monuments constructed of limestone blocks piled up to four meters tall. While some are still adorned with carvings, most have either been eroded or had their blocks removed for use in building other structures. Often resembling piles of stones, the tombs are not always easy to recognize.

Due to the high cost of field work in Oman, Cable’s time was precious. She successfully identified 150 tombs in a one-month period, purposely spending less than 30 minutes gathering information at each one. To maximize her efficiency, she used a standard digital camera to take photos of each tomb from a variety of angles, so that detailed studies of structure and adornment could be done back in the laboratory. Cable also recorded the GPS location coordinates at each tomb with a handheld GPS device.

Cable relied on the GPS-Photo Link software developed by GeoSpatial Experts of Thornton, Colo., to precisely map each tomb’s location and correlate the hundreds of photos she took in the field. GPS-Photo Link is a digital photo mapping software package that automatically links digital photographic images with GPS location and other data. It uses the location data to accurately map the photographs in their correct georeferenced locations on a GIS or other digital map layer.

“Photos are data for archaeologists, and it’s crucial to keep track of which photos go with each tomb,” said Cable “The photo-mapping software combines spatial and visual information and locks them [into a map] so we can go back to continue our surveys and excavations.”

Until her next trip to Oman, Cable will study the photos and the map of tomb locations. She believes the placement of the tombs on the landscape may reveal something about the social order of the Magan. And she hopes the variations in internal tomb structures may illustrate how the building and construction capabilities of these people developed over the course of their 800 years in the region. The mapped photos will guide Cable in making sure she returns to the same tombs to continue her studies.

Cable believes photo-mapping technology will become a widely accepted technology among archaeologists and anthropologists because it provides a vital photographic record of artifact conditions before a site is disturbed for research purposes. Photographic mapping preserves the layout of artifacts and other important features that may be critical to correctly interpreting an archaeological site.

“I hope to see other archaeologists using the GPS-Photo Link software in their research activities,” said Cable.

Press release: Leading Local Events Website, Eventful, Taps 1020 Placecast for Multi-channel Location-Based Advertising

Eventful Inc., which operates leading local events Website, Eventful.com, has selected 1020 Placecast™, the world’s largest place-based interactive media company, to engage advertisers and power its ad-serving technology. Placecast enables Eventful to segment site visitors based upon the location of specific events, significantly increasing advertising revenue opportunities through premium location-based inventory. In addition to advanced targeting, Placecast brings the expertise of a dedicated sales team, which collaborates with Eventful’s direct sales force.

Placecast adds a new dimension to audience targeting by using location-based information provided by publisher sites. This allows advertisers to deliver messages customized to a specific audience and a specific location, increasing the relevancy of these ads and therefore the value of the publisher’s inventory. Using proprietary targeting algorithms, Placecast delivers more relevant ads by matching publisher data with information specific to an event venue in which a user expresses interest. For example, a user checking Eventful’s site for the next Coldplay concert in New York City would see an ad for Scion with the address and link to the closest Scion dealership, while a user looking for outdoor activities in San Francisco would see a localized ad for Subaru.

“Placecast gives us the ability to leverage location and date to deliver more engaging offers to our advertisers and consumers while maintaining the privacy, confidentiality and anonymity of our user base,” said Jordan Glazier, Chief Executive Officer of Eventful, Inc. “It’s an ideal solution for us given our community of highly engaged consumers who use Eventful to discover local events.”

Placecast is currently deployed across Eventful’s online advertising inventory and email programs, delivering targeted audiences to advertisers and customized messages to users. “Integrating Placecast was extremely simple,” said Chuck Norris, Eventful’s CTO. “We were up and running in a matter of days.”

“We are excited to unlock the potential of Eventful’s unique advertising inventory and engaged community of users,” commented Placecast Founder and President, Anne Bezancon. “No other platform can make use of location information the way Placecast can, reaching across multiple channels to seamlessly deliver more relevant ads to users. Combined with our specialized sales force, it is a perfect way for publishers such as Eventful to maximize the usefulness of their location-based content.”

Placecast combines location information from multiple sources, including user-entered ZIP codes, Eventful Web page content and GPS for mobile devices such as Apple’s iPhone. Placecast delivers standard ad units such as Flash, text links, image files, video or audio across any connected device, including laptops, desktop PCs and mobile phones, measuring the performance of campaigns at a level of detail not previously possible.

About 1020 Placecast
1020, Inc. is the developer and owner of Placecast™ Media, the first online advertising network to target highly sought-after audiences using location-based information across the Web, mobile, and Wi-Fi. 1020’s groundbreaking Placecast service recently earned the company the “OnMedia Top 100” Award, given to game-changing companies in the marketing, branding, advertising, and PR industries. Current advertisers include Microsoft Windows Mobile, FedEx Kinkos and Hyatt Hotels. 1020 is funded by Voyager Capital and Onset Ventures. Press release: BOX-tracker launch

BOX telematics launch BOX-tracker to the world at CTIA Wireless 2008 San Francisco Sept 10-12

West Midlands (UK) based, BOX telematics are launching an exciting new tracking product “BOX-tracker” for the fleet and asset tracking industry. “We believe that communications technology can be harnessed to help address climate change.” Said BOX telematics Chairman, June Reynolds-Lacey, “Yes tracking solutions help protect and locate our assets, but they also make us aware of the journeys we make, how many of them are really necessary, what did they achieve, could they have been avoided? If we all make an effort to reduce our carbon footprint we can make a difference.”

The versatile BOX-tracker is a GPS/GPRS device using the latest modem and receiver technology from Telit (http://www.telit.com/) and is robustly engineered specifically for the fleet and asset tracking industry. The BOX-tracker features numerous over-the-air programmable parameters giving customers unparalleled control of their devices and on-the-fly configurability. The data sent over GPRS will be kept as small as possible to keep data costs to a minimum.

The BOX-tracker used in conjunction with 3rd party application service providers (Tracking Companies) will enable the end customer to manage their fleet and mobile resources via real-time information containing journey details, location, status and event reporting. The customer will have two options to choose from “plugged” i.e. to be installed into any type of vehicle or “un-plugged” a battery operated version for any type of tracking. BOX-tracker is also available as a “Private Label” solution with branding and colour options available.

The “BOX-tracker” product is manufactured by National Service Hub (NSH, an operating company within the BOX telematics group) whose facility is close to Birmingham Airport, England. NSH began operations in 1994, specialising in offering After Sales Support and electronics manufacturing services to the cellular and digital electronics industries. BOX telematics MD Steve Hollender believes “the launch of the BOX-tracker and growth in electronics manufacturing services at NSH is a clear indicator that niche manufacturing in the UK is on the up”.

The “BOX” brand was born out of the stables of The Mobilefone Group, a privately owned organisation established in 1989 by June Reynolds-Lacey as a provider of mobile phone, paging and private mobile radio systems. BOX telematics ltd was formed as a company in early 2000 and has developed into a highly esteemed and successful communications business, providing 'wireless' communications for business and domestic customers globally.

The BOX-tracker product can be purchased directly from 3rd party application service providers or via BOX telematics.

Press release: Aberdeenshire’s mobile mapping tracks developments through GGP’s GIS

Scotland's Aberdeenshire Council is using the latest satellite and laser technology to monitor developments. Using a handheld satellite positioning system specifically designed for field mapping applications, a laser distance measurement device and GGP Systems advanced geographical information system (GIS) staff at the Council are accurately mapping development projects, land fill sites and quarries.

This field-captured information is then used to ensure that development projects and activities are progressing in accordance with planning permissions, development policy and operating licences.

“The integrated mobile mapping system brings the real world to the desktop,” commented Joanne Davidson, GIS Technician within the Planning and Environmental Services division of Aberdeenshire Council.

“In virtual real time I can update our existing mapping with information captured in the field. This can then be used to compare with original plans or granted permissions for Planning Development issues, as proof of unauthorised activities for litigation purposes or to assist with the design of new development projects.”

The system supplied by Aberdeen based Positioning Resources comprises of a Magellan MobileMapper system that uses GPS technology to achieve sub-metre accurate calculations of position.

The MobileMapper also offers Bluetooth wireless connectivity for ease of data transfer, a touch screen and phone like keypad for convenient data entry and is rugged, waterproof and lightweight with a working day battery life. Aberdeenshire also use TruPulse 200 Laser Rangefinders that can be linked to the MobileMapper via Bluetooth and are used for measuring distance, height or offset from the handheld devices.

“The ease with GGP integrates with third party devices and software has been critical to roll out of mobile mapping in Aberdeenshire,” continued Davidson. “Data produced and held within the GIS can be downloaded onto the handheld devices for use on the field and vice versa data collected on the field is uploaded for wider use.”

Aberdeenshire Council is a long-term user of GGP’s GIS with the system providing benefit across the organisation and more than 500 geographically referenced datasets in regular use. The newly acquired MobileMapper will further enable data captured in the field to be used to update back office records ensuring currency, consistency and compliance.

Press release: infoUSA Provides Business Location Data for Limbo’s Mobile Social Network Location Tools

Omaha, NE, Sept 4, 2008 - InfoUSA, the leading provider of proprietary business and consumer databases, sales leads, direct marketing, email marketing, and global information solutions today announced its infoUSA database license division has licensed its US business database to Limbo, one of the largest, fastest growing mobile social networks in the US.

Limbo's mobile location tools help its two million members connect with friends by sharing where they are, who they're with, and what they're doing.

infoUSA databases help populate the geographic information within Limbo's location tools, giving members quick access to places nearby. Limbo members use the directory information to easily set themselves to a specific location so people can see where they are, or search nearby listings to find places to go and things to do. Limbo members set their activities and locations through Limbo's website, mobile web, text messages, or through applications for mobile phones such as the iPhone.

"Social networking applications are having a profound effect on the way consumers use their mobile phones," said Jim DeRouchey, President of infoUSA Database Licensing. "Our partnership with Limbo shows the growing necessity of location-based data in mobile and social applications. We are fortunate to be working with Limbo, a pioneer in the mobile entertainment industry, providing new and exciting programs for mobile users."

Limbo technology furthers the usefulness of infoUSA data by automatically filtering location listings by activity. In one example, a Limbo member can set their activity as "Drinking coffee", and a list of nearby cafes within the infoUSA database will populate so members can more easily set their location. The combination of activities and places creates more social opportunities for Limbo members.

"infoUSA's comprehensive POI list and data verification process adds great value to what Limbo offers its community in terms of up to date local business listings and search," says Limbo CEO Jonathon Linner. "This type of quality data is an essential part of creating a successful user experience for Limbo's social networking application. infoUSA has also been extremely responsive to our needs and a pleasure to work with. We look forward to a continuous relationship between the two companies."

infoUSA is the only company to telephone verify all businesses in its database, making over 26 million calls in 2007, to provide our customers with the highest quality data available for mobile directory applications. infoUSA remains a leading provider of proprietary business databases to the local search and mobile navigation industries.

For more information on infoUSA, please contact Jim DeRouchey, President of Database Licensing, at 402-537-7915 or jim.derouchey@infousa.com.

Press release: Prepare for Emergency and Disaster Communications Needs with SPOT Satellite Messenger

Affordable GPS Satellite Communications is Essential for Disaster Preparedness, Planning, and Safety

MILPITAS, CA (September 5, 2008) -- SPOT LLC, the pioneer behind the award-winning SPOT Satellite Messenger™, offers a new, inexpensive product that can be valuable to those living in Hurricane zones and other areas as they prepare to face emergencies and natural disasters.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security declared September ”Disaster Preparedness Month” and with Tropical Storm Hanna approaching the Southeast coast this weekend, and Tropical Storms Ike and Josephine following, residents can use a reliable personal locator to supplement their landline and cell phone service, which may be compromised during a natural disaster.

SPOT is a lightweight, handheld personal safety communications device that enables users to send messages and GPS coordinates directly and reliably to friends and loved ones letting them know they are okay. SPOT can also send an emergency message for help to an emergency call center used by SPOT LLC., from virtually anywhere around the globe. The emergency call center then dispatches the nearest first responders to the location of the SPOT unit.

Hurricanes and other disastrous weather conditions often wreak havoc on communications infrastructure. In these circumstances, and when power outages occur, SPOT remains fully operational because it uses 100% satellite technology, and is battery operated.

“Our hearts go out to those affected by these hurricanes and our deepest sympathies for those who have suffered great losses as a result,” said Darren Bassel, Director of Marketing for SPOT LLC. “Residents in these storm-prone areas need to know that power outages and the failure of landline and cellular service do not preclude potentially life-saving communications.

SPOT is a highly affordable and reliable form of communication that can help provide peace of mind and emergency assistance while other forms of communication have been rendered ineffective, and its GPS tracking features offer residents and emergency responders alike the critical ability to locate family, friends and co-workers during these life-threatening situations.”

SPOT’s suggested retail price is $169.99 with a $99.00 annual subscription service. It is battery-operated (two AA lithium batteries), rugged, and waterproof, and allows families to send satellite text and email messages for help, or to inform loved ones that they are out of harm’s way. In an emergency, SPOT will notify GEOS, an international emergency response center used to dispatch local rescue authorities to the SPOT user’s GPS location.

SPOT is available at more than 5,000 points-of-sale including national and regional outdoor retailers in the US. SPOT is also available at the Company’s website at www.findmespot.com.

About SPOT LLC
The SPOT Satellite Messenger, the world’s first satellite messenger, uses both the GPS satellite network to determine a customer’s location and the SPOT network to transmit that information to friends, family or an emergency service center. SPOT LLC., a subsidiary of Globalstar, Inc. (NASDAQ: GSAT), provides lifesaving communications technology that allows users to communicate from remote locations around the globe.

Thanks to this affordable, cutting-edge personal safety device, the company offers people peace of mind by allowing customers to notify friends and family of their location and status, and to send for emergency assistance in time of need, completely independent of cellular phone or wireless coverage. For more information on how SPOT LLC is helping users live to tell about it(SM) – from disaster preparedness to outdoor adventure purposes – visit www.findmespot.com.

The award under “GIS Project” category was given to Spatial Technologies Ltd (STL) the owner of the interactive online map portal at a colourful ceremony held at the luxurious Sheraton Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos on August 30, 2008.

STL is Nigeria’s leader in mapping and location base technologies. The company together with 3DT and Global Technologies Ltd (UK Based) recently implemented a multi-million naira advanced address geocoding solution for a prominent bank in Lagos using MapInfo technology.

The project involved geocoding the residential address of each of the bank's over 1,000,000 customers. With this solution, the bank can see the geographic spread of its customers and used this in making informed business decisions in the location of its branches and ATMs across Nigeria.

The project marked the first successful attempt by any company to geocode addresses in the history of mapping in Nigeria considering the complex and primitive address system in Nigeria.
The solution used an advanced AI “Address Infrastructure” -first of its kind in Nigeria to achieve this feat despite the

RIMA Foundation awards are given as recognition to organisations (public and private) that have demonstrated excellence in their chosen fields, designing and implementing products relating to Information Management, security and technology for the benefit of their profession and humanity. Some companies that also received RIMA Foundation awards in the past are Shell, Guarantee Bank, Chevron, RICOH, HP, McAfee, MTN, OpenText, etc

Oyedokun Oyewole, President of RIMA Foundation, said that the award “remains the number one Information/Content Management Award in Nigeria. RIMA Foundation, develops, maintains and promotes an active community of vendors, service providers and users and has been delivering successful events in this industry and continuously strives to move the market forward in Nigeria”

MapNTL.com founder and CEO of STL, Ireti Ajala, at a celebratory reception said, "We are delighted to accept this much celebrated and greatly respected award. We are especially delighted that a prominent body like the RIMA Foundation recognises and appreciates the effort that went into conceptualising, designing, and implementing MapNTL.com"

While receiving the award on behalf of STL, Samson Edward –STL’s Corporate Sales Manager said that “One of the reasons why STL was given the award was the quality of its service. STL’s geocentric functionalities are available not only to companies but to all Internet users at www.mapntl.com. At STL, we believe in the power of GIS and it shows in our work, ethic, our solutions and our commitment to our clients' success.”

STL won this award in a category that had Proxy Logics Nigeria and Geo Energy Ventures listed as contenders. These are big players in the fast emerging Nigerian mapping and GI (Geographic Information) industry.

MapNTL.com is more than a yellow page or business directory. Most Business Directories in Nigeria only provide basic details about the companies listed in their database. It is up to the individual to act on the limited information provided. MapNTL.com seeks to take this further by removing the complexities associated with getting direction to each of the over 25,000 businesses listed in its database.
MapNTL.com provides accurate turn by turn driving direction from any point A to point B in Lagos from the comfort of their homes or offices where internet connection is available. Routes are calculated based on either “shortest” or “Quickest” options.
Directions can be displayed as a highlighted path on a map and as a table of clear instructions with timings and distances.

1 STL won a multimillion naira contract in 2008 to deploy UBA PLC’s Location based branch network optimisation solution. This will be the first attempt by any bank in Nigeria to leverage on the compelling visual power of location technology in making informed business decisions. UBA is the largest financial services institution in West Africa with total assets in excess of one trillion, six hundred million Naira (over USD14b) and more than six million (6m) customer accounts.

2 STL was one of the first companies to put maps on the internet in Nigeria, and was the first company in Nigeria to use maps and map data on a consumer website at www.mapntl.com

3 MapNTL.com was the first and indeed the ONLY website providing driving direction to business locations in Lagos and other cities in Nigeria using online interactive map

4 Before MapNTL.com, companies in Lagos had to rely on local people and “Okadas” (Commercial motorcycles) to give their customers accurate driving directions to their business locations. Businesses and revenues had been lost to such ineffective methods for getting direction. MapNTL.com came up with a viable alternative, one which has been responsible for driving growth in the entire sector;

5 MapNTL.com's innovations brought traditional cartographic design to the digital world, enabling high-quality map images to be shown on the internet quickly and cost-effectively. The general public could access intuitive and aesthetically pleasing online mapping for the first time;

Press release: GfK GeoMarketing publishes 25 new, highly detailed digital maps for Turkey

Bruchsal, Germany, Sept 4, 2008 - GfK GeoMarketing recently released 25 new digital maps for Turkey, one of the fastest growing markets in Europe. The map set includes the first-ever comprehensive digital map of the country’s five-digit postcodes. These maps offer companies a reliable and detailed basis for geomarketing – i.e., the analysis of the Turkish market with respect to region-specific criteria.

GfK GeoMarketing recently updated and expanded its digital map set for Turkey. The revised map set includes, for the first time, a map with coverage of the country’s 3,273 five-digit postcode districts as well as a map featuring 6,754 urban and rural neighborhoods.

Digital postcode maps provide companies with a solid foundation for sales territory and expansion planning. In conjunction with a geomarketing software application, the maps allow businesses to visualize their company and market data through the use of the postcodes associated with this information. This straightforward but powerful technique gives companies the ability to reveal their customer distribution, branch turnover volume and market potential on insight-generating digital maps.

The production of highly accurate digital maps of Turkey poses significant challenges, mostly due to the fact that reliable sources of information are hard to come by. Those that do exist are often incomplete and/or contain contradictory information. As a result, highly accurate digital maps of Turkey are very rare. The new Turkey map set is the result of a tremendous amount of first-hand research carried out by GfK GeoMarketing’s cartographers. Together the maps comprise the most comprehensive digital map set available for postcode and administrative districts in Turkey. The map set is available in all common data formats and includes Turkish and international name attributions.

World’s first map of all five-digit postcodes for 2008
GfK GeoMarketing’s cartographers have newly digitized and rendered Turkey’s five-digit postcodes, providing coverage of the 3,272 postcode units (status: 1.1.2008) that exist following last year’s reform. Particular attention has been paid to ensuring that postcode units fit together seamlessly. GfK GeoMarketing is the sole provider of a digital postcode map of this quality and level of detail.

The Turkey 2008 map set also contains a newly digitized map with coverage of 938 counties and greater metropolitan areas (Ilceler). A new level of detail has been achieved for the metropolitan areas of Antalya and Istanbul: Istanbul is now subdivided into eight new metropolitan districts, and Antalya into five.

Highly detailed topographic maps offer excellent point of orientation
The city maps have also been completely revised and expanded: Organized according to number of inhabitants, these maps provide an ideal orientation tool. New additions to the revised map set for Turkey include a map featuring more than 37,344 cities with 10,000 or fewer inhabitants. These maps provide users with an ideal basis for planning sales or service territories, assessing customer distribution and evaluating market potential.

The map set also includes road and rail networks, rivers, lakes and city areas. The increased level of detail is particularly notable with the new high-resolution coastlines. One of the most important sources for such detailed information is satellite imagery. Furthermore, all of GfK GeoMarketing’s maps are vector-based, meaning that they allow limitless zooming. As a result, the achievable detail for many locations is comparable to a traditional printed map at a scale of 1:50,000.

The maps have been cross-checked with maps from TeleAtlas, one of GfK GeoMarketing’s longstanding partners. This level of quality-control and resultant accuracy and detail are necessary for ensuring compatibility of the maps with any standard geographic information system, CRM system and other digital environments.

“In conjunction with a geomarketing software application, digital maps featuring postcode and administrative boundaries constitute one of the most important tools for a company’s planning, controlling and sales needs, particularly in an international context,” explains Wolfram Scholz, managing director of GfK GeoMarketing. “The new map set for Turkey provides our customers with an immensely reliable and detailed foundation for achieving success in this rapidly growing market.”

Available data formats
GfK GeoMarketing’s digital map sets are available in the following data formats: DISTRICT/RegioGraph (GfK GeoMarketing’s geomarketing software solutions), *.tab/*.mid/*.mif (MapInfo Professional), *.shp (ESRI ArcGIS) and *.gdb (GeoDatabase).

The DISTRICT/RegioGraph format includes, for the first time, additional infrastructure data integrated into the maps. This makes it possible to automatically evaluate the accessibility of a given location or region via the road network when planning sales or service territories.

Press release: GeoEye-1 Satellite Launches Into Space From Vandenberg Air Force Base, California

GeoEye, Inc. (NASDAQ: GEOY), a premier provider of satellite, aerial and geospatial information, have announced the successful launch and deployment of GeoEye-1, the world's highest resolution, commercial Earth-imaging satellite.

GeoEye's ground station in Norway relayed the downlink signal it received from GeoEye-1 confirming that the satellite successfully separated from the second stage of the launch vehicle and began automatically initializing its onboard systems.

Bill Schuster, GeoEye chief operating officer, said, "Based upon the data we saw, the satellite is performing properly and ready to begin the next phase towards meeting its mission requirements." GeoEye-1 will now undergo a calibration and check-out period before imagery products will be available for sale.

Matthew O'Connell, GeoEye chief executive officer, said, "Later this fall, we will start providing high-resolution color imagery of the Earth from our newest satellite to customers around the globe.

The imagery from GeoEye-1 adds to the quantity and quality of that currently provided by our IKONOS satellite, and together this magnificent constellation will enable us to meet world-wide customer demand."

O'Connell added, "This launch, and our important relationship with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), shows how public-private partnerships can be successful for the collection of broad areas of the Earth. And all our customers can be assured of continued access to quality products and first-class customer service."

GeoEye-1 is part of the NGA NextView program. The NextView program is designed to ensure that the NGA has access to commercial imagery in support of its mission to provide timely, relevant and accurate geospatial intelligence in support of national security.

GeoEye won its $500-million NextView contract in September 2004 and was able to build and launch GeoEye-1 without any contract cost overruns in less than four years after contract award.

GeoEye-1 will simultaneously collect 0.41-meter ground resolution black-and-white (panchromatic) images and 1.65-meter color (multispectral) images.

Designed to take digital images of the Earth from 423 miles (681 kilometers) and moving at a speed of about four-and-a-half miles (seven kilometers) per second, the satellite camera can distinguish objects on the Earth's surface as small as 0.41-meter or 16 inches in size. Due to U.S. licensing restrictions, commercial customers will get access to imagery at half-meter ground resolution.

GeoEye-1 was built by General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems in Gilbert, Ariz. The imaging system was built by ITT in Rochester, NY. ITT is also building the imaging system for GeoEye-2 slated for launch in 2011. The 4310-pound satellite was launched at 11:50 a.m. PDT on a United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The launch of GeoEye-1 marks the 83rd consecutive successful launch of the Delta II rocket.
