will all the sirfstar 3 receivers on the market be pretty much the same?
or are some makes a lot better than others ?
is there one in particular to go for ?

In general - most SiRF III GPS receivers should perform the same under similar conditions. The variation in price would tend to indicate things like battery life / manufacturing quality etc.

You should also take a look at devices with the MTK chipset. These are very good as well.
