Tracking the path of letter mail was until now a very daunting task given the extreme amounts of mail that are transported around every day. But with GPS technology getting better by the day (higher sensitivity, lower energy consumption) it was only a question of time until someone would try to cram a GPS into a postal package.

So let's have a look at the LetterLogger from TrackingTheWorld.com.

What does it cost and where can i get one?

With a battery life of 4 or 5 days and

GPS needs to be good enough to get a fix even if the letter is transported in a box at the bottom of a stack of boxes in a full truck.

I would guess you could use if for that...

yes, you can use it for tracking cars - passively, of course. But there are other trackers available like the AMOD tracker that I am reviewing currently that are much more suited to that, and are considerably cheaper.

The LetterLogger is really designed for tracking mail packages.

How long before someone mistakes it for a letter bomb, or God forbid uses it for one. Live electronics in a package can be a major cause for alarm.

@p800 - I have actually added a note to the LetterLogger each time I sent it around, explaining what it is, and listing my contact details.

I would see another issue - the Li-Ion battery would not like to be poked into. But that probably also applies to regular mail.

Keep in mind that this was commissioned by the USPS, so one would hope they'd inform their staff to expect such types of packages.
