I have a Tomtom One XL Europe with Western Europe mapping on it.

It has a slot for a SD card underneath. What would I use the slot for (and before anyone says anything, I meant the card, not the slot in which it would go Laughing )

Would this be for extra maps, poi's, voices etc, or music etc?

Any light shed would be appreciated.

Ta!

On that model you can use the internal memory (as you are doing now) OR the SD card slot, not both at once.
So if you want to use a card, EVERYTHING (maps, pois music etc. AND the system files (the ones not in any folders)) have to be copied to the card.

While we are on the SD slot on one XL Europe could anyone tell me why a standard transcend 4GB card will not boot the machine? I know I don't really need the 4GBs but I had no trouble with a memorex 2GB (good price from Morrisons). I have tried FAT, FAT 32 as well as the formating the card came with. I am afraid I do not know the read write speed of either the memorex or the transcend cards.

Are you saying that the device won't boot when it has this SD card inserted, or that your device won't boot from the SD card?

Sorry for the lack of clarity. When the 4Gb card is in the slot and the card has full tt system and map, it freezes at the splash screen. This does not happen with the 2GB card.

Is the 4GB card you have a true SD card or (more probably) an SDHC type of card? - SDHC requires the device to be able to read it, only the x20/ x30 units are known to work correctly with this type of card.

If it is a true SD card (4B were/ are available, but they are very difficult to locate), then the issue will be one of read/ write speed, too slow and the device will refuse to boot up from it - Mike

Thank you for the info Mike. The card is a true SD. Having watched the yellow bar move across the bottom it does move more slowly than the 2 GB card that works. Do you know the min. R/W speed the device requires for useable funtion.
Once again thanks for your help.
