I did post a similar post in the Tomtom section but thought I would throw it open to a wider field.

Previous aging sat nav was wired into the car stereo so it muted and played through the car speakers, it was a nice touch. But now it is dead.

Being a Tomtom, the maps were out of date the second it emerged from the box 4 years ago so it's time to upgrade to a new model with widescreen and a better aerial.

I'm not bothered about playing mp3s, showing movies or pictures etc.

All I want is a more up to date sat nav, preferably with a wide screen with the ability of audio out and a mute to connect to my stereo. Not interested FM modulators etc but a bluetooth would be nice so I can route calls through it and through the stereo.

Can anyone recommend a sat nav with at least audio out and a mute?
If it has any of the other option, that would be a bonus.

Cheers.

I would be interested in the answer myself, but I think you may be dissapointed, The only units i know with audio output are perhaps PDAs, but then i have no experience of the hybrid satnavs, my a696 has a3.5 output socket and the mio 2.5 but i would have thought the muting would have to be function of the radio end and not possible on any satnav.

Yes, the muting is a function of the radio but it is controlled by the sat nav. A wire is connected between the 2 respective pins and just before the sat nav issues a command it grounds the wire causing the stereo to mute.

Considering that the TTG classic had a mute funtion and audio out on the pins, I am surprised it is not more prevalent on other sat nav systems. The Garmin C510 had mute and sound output too but that is a nasty little think with jerky voice commands.

I suspect that there are a few sat navs with mute, but like Tomtom, they don't tell anyone about it.

From one of my replies to your other post:

Getting a device to perform the Mute function is going to be very difficult these days, TomTom did have a Bluetooth Car Connect device on their web site for a while that offered such a connection for the x10 but it was dropped for some reason and never saw the light of day, whether this would have worked with the later devices we will never know.

It is a shame that this capability was never made available, there is no way to get a modern TomTom to mute the radio without external hardware, the BT Car Connect did offer this, but disappeared from their web site quite some time ago. Something like This could be made to offer the functionality you are looking for, I am not aware of any nav units that currently offer a mute radio function - Mike

Nice idea but it wouldn't work as it would pick up music from the speakers and continuously mute.

Oh well, looks like i'll have to get another TTG classic.

OK, to answer my question in case anyone else needs the same info:

The Garmin nuvi 3xx ,6xx and 7xx or the Zumo all have mute pins and audio out pins.

Interesting.

Where are these pins please? I was looking at doing a circuit to provide mute from the audio out connector on my 660. It would loose the first 100mS of sound (or so) but this isn't usually a problem.
