I downloaded the latest speed camera file and have noticed that only 2 of the variable speed limit gatso's are shown, i have the other 7 gatso postions on the overhead gantrys (not all the gantrys have cameras).

How come someone has recorded 2 of the gatso positions, but not the other 7 ?

I have the postions recorded as longtitude and lattitude, but find it difficult using the google map to submit the positions.

Is there another way of submitting the positions ?

thanks

Ive just looked at the 'submit a camera page' and it appears that the gatso's i saw on the gantrys are listed as dummys.

How do we know these are dummys ?

thanks

Type the longtitude and latitude (i.e. 51.459448,-2.51078367) into the search box and click find. It'll find the location.

Tested with a laser / radar detector.

Thanks for the explanation.

Do you think it may be a good idea to include an icon for dummy cameras ?

As far as i know they are on all the time. All activating the variable limit does is lower the trigger speed, but even when the NSL is in effect the cameras are live i believe. They certainly flash anyway. The dummy cameras have no working parts so can't be turned on.

Who is to say that the empty boxes don't get cameras put into them at a later date?

Personally I'd prefer the (dummy) cameras to be in the database as 'real' then there can be no confusion if thier status changes.

This question has asked on many occasions, the Pocket GPS World Speed Camera database is, as the name implies, a collection of locations where cameras are known to be placed.
It does not contain locations where cameras are known to not exist. We would be informed very quickly if the situation were to change, altering these cameras would not be an easy task, almost certainly requiring lane closure for the operator safety while any changes were made.
The current locations have remained static for some considerable time (over 12 months, if not possibly 2 years or more) - Mike

I take your point but it still makes me a bit nervous.

Why? What do you do on other roads where cameras may exist that are not yet in the database?

And more importantly, if you are not speeding, then you have nothing to worry about Laughing

We did actually have them in the database at one time after they were first introduced - every gantry used to shriek at me until I began to feel paranoid! I for one was grateful when they were reduced to just the active ones, but I still mentally say "camera" to myself all the way along that stretch. It helps a lot during restricted speed times that so many of the gantries have mile high signs repeating the speed limit.

Mike's right about it not being a quick job to move cameras to another location. The way traffic management works these days, be aware that the lane closures needed just to take down one set will probably take place overnight and remain in place for a day or two, then be replaced elsewhere to put up the cameras on another gantry. Probably much longer, with loads of lane closures to avoid them dropping a camera or nuts and bolts and spanners on your head. Long gone are the days when they'd just send a man to shin up and down the poles.

If I remember correctly, these cameras (and the ones on the M25) are on the signage gantries. I'd just presumed that these could be moved by accessing the gantry via the fixed ladder from the hard shoulder. I didn't realise that the lanes would have to be closed.

Possibly not, but with todays Health and Saftey regs I wouldn't be too surprised to see the authorities close the motorway just in case a camera were dropped by an employee and caused damage to a passing car Shocked - Mike
