Long MC trip with Triton 500

I'm planning a trip to Oregon then on to Idaho from New Mexico on my motorcycle. I have a Garmin Street Pilot c340 but wanted to use a handheld device so I bought a Magellan Triton 500.
Now that I've got the Triton and have searched through I-don't-know-how-many websites I've just about come to the conclusion the Triton is inadequate for my needs.

I thought it would work like the Garmin, that I could just enter an address and it would take me there. I found out I can order a U.S. street map from Nat'l Geographic for near $1,000. That's a lot more than I paid for the Magellan and I could've gotten another Street Pilot type gps for less. Have I made an error in judgment or am I not looking in the right places?
