Just bought a 930 , tried to update maps and found the internal memory can not hold Europe and American maps. Therefore this item is out of date already. I will now have to buy a memory card for one of the maps.
TomTom will not be able to sell these units with upto date maps because they will not fit.
Surely this is a con, spending nearly £400 and the unit is out of date and will need extra money spent to get it to do what it says on the box.

Are you sure? Have you considered removing some of the voices you don't require to free up some space?

Sadly this is true, the combination of the latest maps complete with the speech recognition files are too big to fit on the internal memory of the device.
You could remove the USA map to the PC and only copy it to the device when required for use (at the cost of the removal of the European map) or purchase an SD card.

4GB is what I would recommend for map storage, 8GB and higher do work but only for music, video and pictures - if the device has to write to the map folder stored in the upper memory addresses of an 8GB or larger card then it doesn't work.

As an alternate remove the ASR files from the map folders, this depends if you use the speech recognition or not, personally I find it doesn't like my accent and I struggle to use this feature, so removal of these files does free up considerable space - Mike

Thanks for the information, unfortunately I have just bought a 8Gb card . Why does the Tom tom write to the map folder?
But anyway surely, a device like this should work from the box. How is TOMTOM going to sell this device with upto date maps, or are they going to sell it with out of date maps just to say it comes with USA and Europe maps.

If you have a map folder stored on the SD card the device has to write to the "MapSettings.cfg" file which contains your POI configurations, Favs and Home location, as it cannot write data to the higher address points above the 4GB point.

I would remove the USA map from the unit and keep it safe on the PC and a copy burnt to DVD, just put it back on the device for your trips to the other side of the "pond"

What TomTom are going to do about this is unknown, they could remove further levels of detail from the map data to reduce file size, but I have to admit this is a rather strange situation they have put themselves in. A brand new top of the range device that with up to date maps that won't fit the internal storage memory, fortunately the price of Memory cards is cheap these days so its not a huge issue - Mike
