Vauxhall are to bring out a new car the Insignia due for release in 2009
with a camera that -

Quote:
The road sign reader works by scanning the road ahead for recognizable shapes and signals, then displaying information like speed limits or no passing zone signs in the digital display in the middle of the gauge cluster. Depending on conditions, the camera can recognize signs up to 100 meters away.

This is a new step into the future, with a car knowing the speed limit and although at present adding it as drivers data, it could eventually be informing the car computer to limit it's speed.

Could this be the beginning, of the end of needing a speed camera database, or even the need for speed cameras?

i doubt it very much. i don't think anyone would buy a car that automatically limits their speed - just have a look at the "TfL using GPS for speed limiting" thread for arguments against it.

drivers can already see the speed limits with their eyes - the only thing this adds is one less thing to remember (well, except to remember to look at the dash to see the speed limit!) - so the database will still be useful.

I contributed quite a large amount of info to that thread link, but as others, I would still argue against all of this technology, although i love progress and all it's technical inventions, when it comes to cars and driving skills, I can see 'big brother' at work in the background.

Everytime these gimmicks appear i can see a distant future of 'robotic' cars with the driver not requiring any driving skills and as in the movies getting into a vehicle and informing the on board computer where to go and what's worse i don't think this is many decades ahead.

If you look back to page-4 of the TfL link above I have detailed as to how close 'the car of the future' is upon us, with the new Honda Accord 2.4-litre Executive automatic, BMW 3 series, Lexus IS IS 250 SE-L, Ford Mondeo Titanium 2.5 and Jaguar - XJ8 3.5 SE.

These might be expensive cars at the moment but are on the road and the technology is not far from being used in a 'bread & butter' car within a couple of years.

All the options quoted are in their early day's, but could change the use of speed cameras in not too many years ahead.
