I've just been reading the recent posts and they all depressingly confirm my reluctant view that the active 10 is not fit for purpose.

i've had mine for a month, used it daily - and have not had a days use when it did'nt freeze or lose satellite fix.

i really wanted this device to work but it is just a source of huge frustration.

i've decided i'd like my money back. trouble is i've had it for a month and bought it from ''field and trek' as it was on offer (still cost over £400.00 with mapping!) i'm now out of their refund period.

however i do not want a repair as i don't believe any repair will fix it - and also i did'nt pay £400.00 for a repaired item.

has anyone managed to get a refund in similar circumstances?

I've not had mine freeze at all and satellite lock has been very good, even in a forest. Reception when hidden in the car does cause the track to stray a little of course, but even then it makes a good effort.

My only criticism is it takes a little while to get the initial lock; it can show reception from at least six satellites and still takes a while to lock on, unlike my car SatNav that locks on almost instantaneously (so it can be done).

Sounds like you may have a dodgy one and need to get it replaced.

Which map pack do you use with it? From talking to Richard at Satmap a little while ago, I got the impression that there was some kind of memory fragmentation problem that would only occur when using large map packs (for example the South GB 1:50k map that I use).

I generally found that my device would lock up after about an hour and a halfs use... I upgraded to 1.18-9 beta on Thursday (phone Satmap for details on how to install) and the device didn't lock up at all while using it on Saturday or Sunday, so they may have finally fixed this problem.

Which map pack do you use?

Thanks,
Ash.

thanks for your responses. i am using a large map pack, but after contact with satmap loaded the most recent software.
i tested it over the weekend.

it still randomly lost satellite fix and froze. there are other people on this forum who report the same issues with the latest firmware (1.189)

it is after testing this latest software that i've reluctantly decided that i can't waste any more of my time with the active 10.

if i wanted to be a beta tester for satmap i'd expect to be paid for the job!

andyb2...

It's a shame you seem to have had a lemon. My unit acquires a lock withing a couple of minutes (well under a minute if I haven't moved), it maintains lock even when in the bottom of a rucksac in a forest, and I've only ever had two freezes.

Send it back to swap... or are you going for a refund?

i'm not sure what to do. i had a very hostile email off lewis price at satmap saying it is'nt their problem - i have to take it up with field and trek.

he added that they would have 'a look', but i don't want a look. i can see the unit endlessly shuttling between me and satmap (at great cost to me) and for the saga to continue endlessly.

i want either a non-lemon unit or a refund.

satmap appear to be saying they don't give a damn

Technically in the UK, responsibility for the warranty lies with the retailer who sold you the device. Returning it to the manufacturer is their problem not yours.
