Bl,

No, you got me there. If, for example, I enter Congleton as the city and High Street as the road I get all the High Streets in Cheshire to choose from. If I enter Cheshire as the city and High Street as the road I get all the High Streets in Cheshire again.

Is that a step forward?

Here's the full text of the reply I've recieved from TomTom - they marked it as resolved after sending this! Can anyone here tell me what I'm missing, as I can't for the life of me see any advice in there at all?!

Hi Mark

You've obviously come across the infamous automated response. It's annoying because you then have to go through the same nausea all over again to get an answer to your original question. A lot of companies seem to use the same tactics. I find it with both Freeserve and my mobile phone service provider O2.

Hope you eventualy get your letter answered.

Regards

I think they mean that as you've waited so long for an answer you've probably solved the problem yourself.

I got one of these - I replied saying "but you haven't answered my question".

That generated a response!

I've just received a response from TomTom which includes the advice: "As a workaround try searching with the County name and then the street name."

Is it me?

Confused Richard

That's not a workaround at all - merely a description of the broken behaviour, which was explicitly clear in the 'open letter'. I suggest you point this out to them.

No matter what you enter - whether it be a town/city, partial postcode or county name, Navigator 3 displays all streets in the county of what you entered (well, some options are not strictly counties, such as London and Greater Manchester, but you get the idea).

Entering a county name does no good - other than cover up the brokenness of Navigator 3, because at least then it is returning streets in the area you entered.

I have had a further reply from TomTom which says "To my regret, no status/solution yet." I have a further reply in mind, which I'm intending to write at some point in the next 48 hours - I will send it to TomTom and post it here.

Unfortunately I've managed to pick up a nasty case of flu (on top of my chronic health problems) and I'm not thinking that straight right now. I'm only sat up here because I was in too much pain laying down any longer and I needed to be upright for a while.

I'm a bit late on the scene - then again I've only just started using Navigator 3 - but I have just posted Davids open letter.

All I can say is thank goodness for Niels Thomsen and his excellent postcode search app. He really should get a royalty form Tom Tom for patching up Navigator 3!!

Get well soon David we all need you !
I have seen no post from Tom Tom, so I guess they are still sending out Navigator 3 warts and all!
I have bought the Europe 3 series and it found my friends town in France but did not list his street name. So i will be able to drive to the town and then ring for more specific directions. Ah well are we expecting to much?
Locally I am directed onto the A1(m) at a junction that they never built, so somwhere the original plans got as far as "Telatlas." 8O

I know the fealing regarding the flu, I've been layed up in bed for the past 3 days with it checking the odd email and forum. Luckily I'm about 75% over the worst of it so I'm starting to get back to normal, but it really does zap the energy right out from under you.

Started as a really sore throat then went to fever and I've been sleeping about 15 hours a day. Hope you get well soon, it's never good to get things like the flu or bad colds when you have a serious condition.

I thought that TeleAtlas had to physically drive the roads before they were added to the geodata? And also TomTom and Navman verified them? I assumed this is why it takes so long for 'new' roads to appear in the end products.
I dont know where you are or the junction you are referring to so I can't check for it's presence in SmartSTv2

It seams to me that the "we must drive it first" excuse is just that - an excuse. There are simply too many errors in the database (roads shown taking a route they never have done in reality) for it to be true.

They probably should drive all roads, but I don't believe they do. I've been taken down several roads that it's physically impossible to drive - including one in Yorkshire that is now a field, and has been for about 30 years according to the farmer! No-one can tell me they drove that before adding it to the data, or that it changed since they did!

Yes I know, but TomTom is the only firm I've ever seen who are crass enough to send a response that JUST says "this is an auto-response, hope it helps, goodbye". All others at least do an automatic search of their knowledgebase based on keywords in your question, and attach the results. It rarely answers your question if you are sensible enough to have searched the knowledgebase yourself first (as I always do), but at least there is some attempt to help!

But then, sadly, I no longer expect anything better from TomTom. It's quite funny nowadays to think I used to recommend them to people because of their customer service, back in the days when I first bought Citymaps.

Try Seidio. I asked them a question on April the 23rd and got an automated response the same day saying just that they'd received my message and that they aim to reply in one working day. I'm still actually waiting for a proper reply.

Ah yes, I do get that from lots of firms - an auto-responce saying they'll get back to me, then nothing.

But TomTom sent that one, and then the one I quoted, and then marked the issue as resolved!

Worse still, I then posted a follow up asking (politely) for an actual reply, they left that as "updated" for a couple of days, then marked it as resolved again!

David,

I've sent a copy of your letter to TomTom along with a synopsis of my own experience this last weekend. Software was truly awful to use with constant crashes and a ridiculous lookup database. I'm not impressed at all!
