Changeover from iPaq to phone based TomTom

Apologies for a slightly long post.

I've had TomTom 5 running on my iPaq 1940 for several years, I love it and can't imagine life without it. However the iPaq is beginning to get cranky and several times now has performed an unprompted hard reset, meaning I lose my navigation capabilities in all sorts of strange places.

Questions for help/comment please:

1. Is the problem with the iPaq likely to be helped by buying a new battery? Or is the problem withthe iPaq likely to be terminal. (It's my 2nd one, the first lost its screen and I bought a replacement 2 yrs ago). I'm reluctant to spend £30+ on a new battery that might not do the trick.

2. My options if I have to get a new solution include buying TomTom6 on DVD and installing it on my Nokia E65, which already has a 2GB card installed and stores very little. I'm confused though how TomTom would work on this as the phone doesn't have a touch screen, so how do you operate the program?

3. If the iPaq is terminally ill, which of the PDAs that are around now are best for battery life as I've read lots about HP still not having improved this. I've got a replacement bluetooth so the PDA route is still my preference if I can get a decent one at reasonable cost.

4. My other option is to go for a new all-in-one but having seen V3 on my daughter's TomTom One I'm not impressed with the routing accuracy. I have had to borrow it a few times and it keeps taking me down all sorts of bizarre detours. Has anybody else had this problem and do you know of any obvious fixes?

1. New battery - may fix it, but I guess £30.00 is a cheap way of finding out.
2. TTN6 - you use the number pad instead of touch screen. So effectively plan route is 1, advanced planning is 2 etc.

Another option to consider is the PPC based phone where you still use the touch screen, this would mean changing the phone which might not be an option. I would be reluctant to go for TomTom Navigator 6 to be honest it is getting a little long in the tooth with the latest map you can run on it being around 12 months old. There are other options to look at, if you still want to use the Nokia E65 have a look at the new Route 66 as it has far newer maps.
As for the TomTom PNA sending you down strange routes, how is it configured for route planning? - if it is set up to use Shortest Route by default this will explain what you are experiencing, try selecting "Fastest" instead. If it doesn't ask for a route type then you will need to configure the device to ask the question - Mike

Thanks guys.

The TomTom PNA is set to fastest route, as is my iPaq. I've even run my iPaq Tomtom 5 along side TomTom One V3 and they plan totally different routes!

I am reluctant to change to even Navigator 6! I've got all the Western European maps with V5 and although I don't use them very often it seems mad to pay for new maps which are already old ones.

I looked at Route 66 - but it doesn't look like it's compatible with my E65?

The Route 66 software requires the following:

A free slot for an extra memory card (microSD/miniSD)
Bluetooth wireless technology
Symbian S60 platform v3.0 or higher
Optional: a GPRS connection to download up-to-date traffic information
Not compatible with Sony Ericsson UIQ, Nokia S80/S90 and Microsoft Mobile
You must have a PC with a USB port, a memory card (larger than 512 MB) and a (Bluetooth or built-in) GPS receiver to use this product

Unless I am wrong your E65 meets this as it runs Symbian version 3, see user interface section on This Page - Mike

Thanks again Mike. I'm still a bit reluctant I think, I love the touch screen usage of TomTom on my PDA and I would almost rather spend twice as much to keep that than try to use the keypad on the phone, which is really kinda small.

I'll investigate alternative PDAs and see if I can use my existing maps on a new device. fingers crossed, just now it seems to be working ok.

I'd be loathed to part with my TT6 equipped iPaq 1940, one of the best gadgets I have.
Looked at replacing it but seems I'd have to spend £250+ for something else, then I'd have to replace all the accessories (memory cards, Car holders, chargers, cases, pc accessories) which bumps the cost further.

£5 for peace of mind seems like a cheap option.

Thanks Kastenar - that was really helpful. You sound like somebody after my own heart, the kit is a fantastic combo and the thought of losing it (all of it, with all its functionality) is more than I can bear!

Just at the moment it's working ok but I've just loaded up the Spain maps ready for my hols next weekend, hopefully it will last me while I'm away but I'll definitely look at a new battery - as you say for a fiver it's worth it, £30 or £40 I would wonder!
