iPhone GPSAn enterprising electrical engineer is currently testing working prototypes of a GPS module compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch devices.

His blog site here is covering the design and prototyping stages from early CAD design models to his current working prototypes.

He needs 1000 orders for the first production run so if you're interested in obtaining a unit once the development process is complete you can vote on the website to indicate your interest.

WOW!

Now that we can see it can be done, either it will be in the shops within a couple of months, or Apple will announce that they are going to release one.
How soon is Navigation?

Are Apple going to go with TomTom or Garmin......? With Nokia buying Navteq and TomTom acquiring TeleAtlas kind of muddies the water a bit seeing as someone will have to supply the mapping and Google do not have a viable routing engine yet.

True, but co-pilot have a deal with T-Mobile in the UK (as you know) and I doubt that Apple will go with someone that is not a global player.

And especially anyone that has anything to do with Navteq (as in Nokia) or Microsoft. Maps is one thing, the route engine is another.

they also have a 'deal' with o2 as well so i can't see that affecting anything?

still, it'd be interesting as to who they go for (if anyone at all)

Hell no. The only place you could navigate to would be the nearest Apple Store and possibly Starbucks.

So...we agree Apple will do it then? There have been many posts regarding lack of GPS functionality on the iPhone and now we can see it is possible.

If this guy is as clever business minded as he is technically he will make a fortune.

As I see it , either Apple will go for it or at least allow a third part to, in which case this guy's efforts, whilst laudable, will be usurped by much bigger players or they won't.

If they don't then this may be the only option and I guess you would need a Jailbroken iPhone in order to use it which will drastically reduce the market. No major player will bother developing if it requires the iPhone to be Jailbroken to use.

Having said that, mine's Jailbroken and it's a better phone because of it, we'll have to see what 2.0 brings to the mix.

Maybe so, but the goal of the developers who have hacked the iphone is to try and get win mobile functionality from it. E.g. The first thing that the developers did with the sony psp was to install windows on it!

We have previously reported this.

As a long standing Win Mobile device the iPhone wins hands down for me. I want email and web primarily and neither are handled with any great skill by a PocketPC.
