pocketgpsworld.comTomTom announced yesterday that they have signed an agreement with Swisscom to bring their High Definition Traffic (HDT) service to Switzerland. TomTom aim to offer HDT to 50% of their user-base by the close of 2008.

HDT uses anonymously collected data from multiple sources including data from mobile phones to enable precise route transit times to be calculated. The movement patterns of mobile phones enables a much higher quality and accuracy of traffic movement to be predicted and hence much more accurate arrival times which can take account of delays, accidents, road-works and issues such as rush hour and other time of day related problems.

TomTom announced the HD receiver at CeBit last month. Replacing the power supply plug, it contains a Sim Card and the service, which will be subscription based, will gather its data via the GSM phone network. This should hopefully resolve the reception issues experienced by users of RDS services which rely on the FM radio network.

"Personal navigation is more than just getting drivers from A to B," says Harold Goddijn, TomTom's chief executive officer. "By providing users with intelligent route information through innovative technologies such as HD Traffic, drivers receive faster, more accurate and more complete traffic information than previously available, so they can avoid unnecessary delays and be in control of their daily route planning again."

Georges Schlegel, head of customer experience design, corporate business, Swisscom (Switzerland) Ltd, says, "The unique quality of our mobile phone network, coupled with the innovative new TomTom traffic information system, provides road users with the precise information they need so they can make efficient and effective use of the road network."

TomTom HD Traffic is already live in the Netherlands. Agreements with Vodafone UK, Vodafone D2 in Germany and SFR in France have been announced previously. TomTom is on target to make HD Traffic available to 50% of TomTom's entire installed base in Europe by the end of the year 2008.
