Hi guys,

I am just trying to scope a project out and have limited knowledge of GPS so excuse my ignorance- any help you could give would be great.

Basically I want to know if a GPS receiver could be wired to a basic circuit board easily in order to trigger an action. Basically the purpose would be to track assets and be able to send a signal to them in order to trigger an LED for instance. The assets would be monitored from a bespoke online programme and then we would able to activate an action such as an LED if needed.

Thanks in advance.

Darren

GPS data from receivers are presented as text strings. You would need a device able to read this and work out what you want from it. Google for "NMEA string" for more info on what is presented and in what format.

Also be aware that GPS receivers are just that - they receive the GPS data from the satellite and pass it out eg on a serial port. There is no provision to pass it on to somewhere else or someone else to check where the device is without another system (eg mobile phone) in place.

Depending on the distances involved, you may be better off using RFID chips or mobile phone technologies.

GPS recievers need a lot of power, so for asset tracking would generally only work when teh device was powered on. The problem then is getting a fix while inside a building - modern recievers are good, but not good enough to be reliable.

You will also need communication equipment to send GPS data and recieve isntructions to turn on the LED.

The are COTS solutions to do this, depending on your budget and number of units required, search for Fleet tracking, and Asset tracking.

This is not an easy thing to get working reliably.
