It is possible to make a WiFi GPS quite easily now, so this is an instant workaround. Using a WiFi module which has the complete server on board costs about £25, plus the GPS, and software which runs on the WiFi module itself. Module becomes a server / AP which the phone connects to, and bingo! - GPS data into the iPhone.

Easily done.

They are from the Apple SDK presentation, which is available on the Apple site. They refer to Q4/07 sales, and have not been disputed AFAIK.

Ah, no offence then, but thats taken with a large bit of salt (i.e. a truckload). I dont generally take in anything by the makers themselves, be it apple, MS etc.

Im not sure how this tomtom phone will work. As someone pointed out, you would be buying tomtom first, and the phone second. I dont think the market is balenced like that.

A few are starting to take interest in the phone GPS side of things now. With midrange models coming out capable of satnav, its obviously going to be a very large part in the market.

Recently, a number of satnav makes have been working on mobile versions of there software. Noteably, route66, Garmin, and copilot. All have released polished versions.

They're from Canalys. The figures quoted are here

A similar worldwide report here from the same analyst though: http://www.canalys.com/pr/2008/r2008021.htm

Please note the summary:
Q4 highlights – converged devices

* Converged device shipments rose 72% year-on-year in Q4 2007, the highest growth seen all year
* Nokia and RIM retained their number one and two positions
* Apple achieved third place despite its limited geographic coverage, with 7% share
* APAC converged device shipments rose 23%, EMEA 79%, and North America 222%
* Symbian leads with 65% share, ahead of Microsoft on 12%, RIM on 11%, Apple on 7%, and Linux at 5%

Is this why I cannot find a compatible phone from Tom Tom's list for my newly purchased 720T. None of the phones TT lists appear in the current manufacturers listings.

I feel your pain brother. Very Happy

But it's not an impending Tomtom phone that's the cause, it's always been the same. I've always found TomTom's support for new phones to be diabolical. Even for mega sellers, like the Motorola V3, by the time Tomtom has sorted the support I've moved on to a newer phone.

That's why I don't bother subscribing to Plus services. I can never use them.

I would have thought a company that size could have afforded to employ a geek school-leaver with a backwards baseball cap to do nothing but sort phone compatibility on a full time basis.

Well consider this one, When HTC launched the P3300 Artemis it was pre-loaded with TomTom software so one would assume it would work with their devices, Oh no it didn't for quite some time, eventually my 720 could communicate with the phone but this took quite some time (and required quite a bit of messing about), there is a thread on the forum detailing members experiances with different modern phones and the TomTom platform, you would be better off using that to work out what works and what doesn't - Mike

And to compound the issue many network providers have the phone's firmware tweaked to support their services / products so the combinations to test are fairly huge. You can see why TomTom would seriously consider a specific phone/hardware platform (which will have it's firmware tweaked to work!)

HTC hardware running Android(google)OS.....

Dreams?
If you want to see some other comments about the HTC Dream and a video showing Android in operation have a look at This Page, when the applications or programs menu comes up take a closer look in the lower right corner of the screen, it is fuzzy but could this be a red hand on a globe?? It certainly looks a very slick OS and knocks spots of the WM5 and 6 OS we are used to - Mike

I wonder why does the button section below the screen look like a separate part?

It most probably is a separate part (it certainly looks that way), optional extra maybe if you want the roller ball (Lutz) - or have they gone one better and put the phone in the pod that attaches at the bottom and the rest is the PDA, this would make sense as you could sell two very similar devices - a PDA with full capabilities and a PDA style phone with the pod attached.
I don't think the video is the HTC Dream though it is just a demo of Android on an unknown device - Mike
