Gerraway with you! Hemel Hempstead wasn't born when Swindon's roundabout was built.

Only just Dennis

Quote:
Until September 1972, there was only one Magic Roundabout and it was a children's television programme featuring Dougal the dog, a hippy rabbit called Dylan and the spring-loaded Zebedee.

Quote:
It used to be called the Plough or Moor End roundabout but the "Magic" roundabout, or the funny roundabout, as it tends to be called now, was built to cope with the increased congestion that came as Hemel grew. On the first day of operation in June 1973, traffic came to a standstill and backed up to Berkhamsted. Drivers eventually got used to it although you still see the odd trilby hatted motorist causing chaos and looking totally lost on the roundabout.

Sorry GPS Fan but I didn't make it clear.

The first quote was regarding the Swindon one, meaning Swindon beat Hemel by about 9 months.

This has gone a bit OT hasn't it.

Yet again this has wandered way off topic and needs splitting up, if any other Mod or Admin can oblige as splitting threads isn't something I find easy on a mobile phone, otherwise I will do it when I get home - Mike

Maybe, but if you go and delete these posts, then there must be a heck of a lot more recent ones which warrant deletion in preference

Here's the Hatton Cross Roundabout on the Heathrow Airport perimeter road. Always good for a laugh: Here

Off Topic - of course,

Been away for awhile (moved a business to different address), seems that i've missed out on the fun, can't believe all the long winded posts, as others have found tooooo long to read without falling asleep. I find it strange how different opinions don't seem to be tolerated very easily without some getting stroppy in print.

Back on course -

I haven't tried the Swindon roundabout, but when i first went around the Hemel Hempstead version, although at first it seemed odd being on the "wrong" side, i thought it was a great idea and applauded that at last the local council had looked at the situation seriously.

After looking at the Swindon roundabout i feel the same, to those nervous drivers who find it daunting - leave the big towns for those who like a challenge.

PS.
Of course i'm not referring to you DennisN, as Britain's most famous whitevan man, you don't need the extra stress generated on these roundabouts.
What's the latest on your new wheels?
If i don't have time to reply i will be still reading the posts, can't miss the fun.
