So, what I am reading into all of the above is that the variable speed cameras on the M25 SW section are always activated????
True or False....................

I think the jury is still out on that one. Seen both cases stated equally forcefully.

There must also be some kind of delay on these things

It says above:
When a new speed limit is posted, the CMIIS software does the following:
1, Starts a timer for a user-set "grace period", to allow the motorist time to react to the new limit. This is generally set at 5mins.

Lots about this in the near identical topic that is running concurrently to this one http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=63843

(and probably in the similar M42 topic too!)

I think there will be no change required for the database - we already have something like 9 sets of Variable cameras on that stretch of the M25.

Am I right in thinking that a large number of the boxes seen on the gantry are dummies? e.g. I see boxes on the reverse of the gantry close to J12 (clockwise), but the speed camera database shows nothing.

A stupid question, but how do PGPSW verify which units are dummies?

Surely, most boxes are situated such that it's difficult to see whether the box contains a camera.

In my experience, on the M25 there is either a box there or not, as far as I've seen. All gantries have road markings and could have a camera, but don't. Every time the database warns me there is a camera there is a box, and when it doesn't there isn't....

Before my sat nav and the database i learn that a quick glance on the opposite carriageway will show cameras on that carriageway or not. Usually if they are on one carriageway they are also on the other. Some gantries you can see the cameras but it's easier from a long way off rather than close up....

It's also possible some one (Verifier) has a radar / laser detector?

Do you have the latest database?

They might have been moved since the last database.

Further to what Paul says says, I would check your installation and set-up.

As far as I know, there have been no major changes around that section recently. where there is a box there is a camera, and the boxes don't tend to get moved around.

It would really help if you could get some actual co-ordinates of one or more of the gantries you're talking about. I can't speak for other brands, but the safest way (if you don't have a passenger), is to save the position as a favourite as you go past. If you have a model that has the "quickmenu" you can set it up so it needs just one tap on the screen to save a position.

Unless I missed it in all that techie jargon, above, I didn't see the fact that this change is to do with replacing the old film cameras with digital cameras. From 15th February, ALL speed speed cameras in the variable speed limit section of the M25 from jncts 10 to 16 ie the A3 junction to the M40 junction will become digital. The previous film cameras were limited because the film ran out too quickly Crying or Very sad Additonally, the speed tolerance is being lowered (sic) to 79mph for the top limit (which is the rough 9mph difference between the speedometer display and actual speed at 70mph).
The report I saw also mentions that new variable speed limits are likely on the M6 - between Birmingham and Manchester and on parts of the M1.

Sorry if I am repeating information but my speed reading abilities have been reduced now that I have gone digital Shocked Sad

It's in the title Wink (Thanks to Oldboy, I'm checking them carefully now!)

Yep, I update pretty much on every release.

Understood. My assumption after reading posts a few months back was that the boxes were just dummies, but I'll save a favourite and/or compare/contrast with where it's shown on the Google Maps part of the new camera entry page.

(Basically through the gantry you can see boxes, but it's near impossible for obvious reasons to verify this when you're the only person in the car. I'd always assumed until I was using the database that these were cameras)

I'd sort of assumed, when I first read the email about it elsewhere, that suddenly all these apparent dummy boxes would be livened up and made digital... not that it's exactly easy to speed anyway on the M25 around the times I'm travelling.

I grabbed a Favourite as I drove past two of them.

Google Maps isn't particularly great for identifying it, as it still shows old maps from when the contraflow was in place.

Microsoft's Live Maps is better though, and (assuming these links work) here's one example gantry and here's another.

Through the gantries I can see boxes, although short of being an owl in a convertible I can't confirm the detail of what they are. I'm more just curious as to whether these are cameras or not. Perhaps they're part of the variable speed system?

Don't use Google Maps, use the map on the camera submission page.

You can enter the Latitude and Longitude from your TomTom straight into the location box (use "-" for west).
That will show you if a camera or a dummy has been logged at that site already.

Thanks for the info. Is there an easy way to get that data from TomTom's Favourites? It isn't immediately obvious.
