The normal approach to this is to delete all the files from the root of the TomTom device, just the files though

DO NOT DELETE ANY FOLDERS

Then connect the device to the PC and run TomTom Home, let it check for updates and it will download and install the latest version of software to your device - Mike

I'm afraid THAT one doesn't work for me...

I usually suggest this one for people looking for their reset button:

My girlfriend has a TomTom ONE (USA version) which she got as a present last Christmas. On trying to update its firmware soon afterwasrds, it locked up and wouldn't respond to anything. She took it back and got a replacement (Americans provide a "take it back" receipt with gifts, which doesn't specify the price! :-)

Since then she won't update the new one in case it does the same (almost out of warranty now).

Is there a "safe" way to update it, or is there a chance of bricking it?

Cheers,
Howard

Take a FULL windows backup first of the device and its contents.

Then even if something does go wrong you can almost always recover.
